Despite the short bench, the Wildcats gave the Sun Devils all they could handle in Saturday night's game. WSU trailed by one goal again in the third period, this time 3-2. This time there wasn't a lapse and the 'Cats stayed close right up until the final minute of the game when they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. WSU couldn't come up with the equalizer and ASU scored in the empty net to close the scoring. Anton Volkov and Chris Roberts scored the goals for the Wildcats. The Sun Devils compete at the Division I level of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. WSU competes at Division II. It was a win-win situation for WSU going into the weekend. The losses don't effect their ranking because they faced an opponent in a superior division. If the Wildcats would have won. it could have influenced their ranking. Regardless, WSU came away from the weekend with some good experience at a faster pace of hockey. The Wildcats are now preparing for a trio of games this weekend in Provo, Utah, at the Western Showcase. WSU will face Utah Valley University, Boise State University and the University of Northern Colorado. The increased workload of three games instead of two in the weekend could be a tough task for the short-handed Wildcats. "I think we'll be alright," Soto said. "Our schedule is not going to be too tough." The Wildcats are expected to beat Utah Valley - who they already beat 6-2 earlier this season - and Boise State - who hasn't fielded the best teams in the past few seasons. Northern Colorado could be a tougher task however. "Overall, I think it's going to help us out." Soto said. "Get a couple wins, get some guys some rest." The Wildcats' next home game wont be until Nov. 7 when they face the University of Utah. The 'Cats are currently in the midst of an eight-game road trip. Emotions ran high as both teams looked for the go-ahead score. In the 76th minute, Eastern Washington Head Coach George Ilagaegc was given a red card for using foul language and ejected from the game. During a rough play near the end of the first half, McCoy was injured and escorted off the field to the hospital. Several stitches and one hour later, McCoy returned to the field during the first overtime. It would prove to be the difference. "Five minutes left in the half, I went in for a slide," McCoy said. "I ended hitting the girl's knee with my forehead and it was bleeding pretty bad. It was deep enough that I couldn't keep playing so they told me 1 had to get stitches." But McCoy would have one more challenge to face, as she was punched in the head duringascuffle in the EWU box. The aggressor, EWU's Hannah Kreminski, was given a red card and sent off the field and WSU senior Shavlee Hyde received a yellow card for unsporting behavior during the same play. After McCoy's penalty kick was stopped, the senior midfielder delivered justice in the form of a game-winning goal with just 12 seconds left before the game ended. "1 knew time was running out but not that there was only twelve seconds on the clock." McCoy said. "I felt bad about missing the penalty shot and I didn't want to let the team down, so I was ecstatic to pull off the win. It was especially nice because the Eastern girls and the crowd were talking trash the last few minutes of the game." The win put the Wildcats on top of the Big Sky standings and added fuel to a fire that will have to continue burning strong for the 'Cats to get through another lough weekend on the road. Senior receiver Bryant Hteuati came into this season with the WSU records for punt return yards and kick return yards under his belt. Bui this year, he has also moved into first place on WSU's career all-purpose yards list. We are all still waiting for Eteuati to take a kick or punt back for a touchdown this year, which would be the fifth in his career, breaking him out of a first place tie for most all-time at WSU. Junior Tim Toone also has the remaining five games of this season and his entire senior year to gain 306 receiving yards, Which would put him at 1,975 in his Want to bow how Serial Sriller thinfrs.' career, and would move him into 10th on the all-time list. * On another exiting note, we also enjoyed watching defensive end Kevin Linehan recover a fumble, and return it 95 yards for a touchdown in the season opener against the University of Montana-" Western, also a WSU record. Overall, the last five games of this season should be ones Wildcat fans should turn out for. Not only is WSU in the driver's seat for a Big Sky Conference Championship, bm by season's end, we could watch several individual records fall as well.
