Around 250 students have gone to get their flu shots since the Health Center started giving them out on Oct. 6. WSU junior Alisha Cox and her husband Aaron, a WSU senior, are among the ranks who are now ready to face flu season. "I think it's a great service because if you get the flu you're not going to be able to go to class and you're going to miss out on school," Alisha said. "I think it's awesome they're offering it for free because in some places it's like 20 or 30 bucks." Aaron said he thought it was "rad" the Health Center was making it easy for students to get their vaccinations. "They make it available for us to come any time, pretty much," Aaron said. "You can come after class, so it's pretty cool that you can do that. It's not real hard to come in and get it done; it's a real easy process. So you just sign up, go in and get your shot. It's kind of cool." Faculty and staff of WSU are not entirely left out of the loop when it comes to getting a flu vaccine. They will be able to receive their shots through Human Resources for a minimal fee. McQuillan said students generally confuse the average flu, which is accompanied by aches, pains, fever, and other common cold symptoms, and the stomach flu, which is concentrated mostly in the stomach. He also said the vaccine being administered for the flu would not protect students from more severe strands, such as the Bird Flu. "I would just reemphasis the issue of students that have chronic medical conditions, asthma, diabetis, chronic conditions, really make it a point to come in now and get it as soon as possible," McQuillan said. "Because it takes a couple of weeks for the vaccination to actually work. It lasts a good year once you're vaccinated. These are the people who can sometimes end up in the hospital with complications related to influenza." Students can visit the Health Center at any time Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 3 p.m. and do not need an appointment. A valid student ID is required, and the shot only takes a few minutes.
