GRAPHIC BY NATE STOUT I THL SICNPOSJ The Nuance: Love and Dylan music's chronology, hardly a centimeter. One of my favorite songs by Dylan was never even officially put onto a studio album, Signpost though it has been covered by artists from columnist Joan Baez to Johnny Cash, though the latter had to revise some of the lyrical content to A couple of weeks ago I wrote about fit the political correctness of the day. That my favorite composer, Richard Wagner. is not to say that "Mama, You've Been on my Today I would like to discuss my favorite Mind," is pornographic in the least, but that "contemporary" artist. He's the undersized aging not attempting reconciliation or asking midwesterner. A forgiveness, he's just thinking about her. - daunting gap Already a huge Dylan fan by the time I first of 30 or 40 heard this pseudo-ballad, I remember years, but being interested in the concept Dylan, like in the big Wagner, took subjects such as love and glory, p i c t u r e over-sweetened, which were made phony of art by their predecessors. He made them seem a n d real, by juxtaposing the heart with a hint of bitterness and authenticity. But sitting here now, perhaps more emotional than normal from circumstances of life, I hear something more: I'm not asking you to say words like yes or no, Please understand me. I have no place I'm calling you to go. I'm just whispering to myself, So I can't pretend that I don't know. Mama, you're on my mind. g here listening to those Josh McCatterty lyrics sung over plain chords strummed on a bare acoustic guitar, I feel the song more than ever before. My heart takes my mind to a place above where it began. More than just a man thinking about his romantic history, it's a man who still loves her. A situation where his heart still calls to hers but his mind and logic know that it is impossible. The relationship cannot be, and it is out of his love for her, rather than in spite of it, that he refuses to call her to him. He sits misty-eyed and choked up, much the same as I sit writing this, but does not request her back. Perhaps there is a place within him that wants her back. Wants things to be like they were when things were fresh and they had not yet discovered the incompatibility of their futures. Possibly he wanted to wander and seek adventure while she preferred to nest. Maybe they had each fooled themselves that the other would someday come around to their way of thinking, and are now confronted by the fact that though they love one another, the facts of their situation prevent the respective lives each needs. Then again, maybe that's just great art. The perfect combination of generality and specification. A reflective glass blank canvas. Comment on this story at wsusignpost com.
