Show 12 Wednesday, April 9, 2008 Wr T H E SIGNPOST WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY DIVERSITY H-P lines up new, ultra-compact laptop push By Rex Crum presents MarketWalch SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett-Packard Co. on Tuesday unveiled its latest entry into the laptop PC market with an ultra-portable computer designed to appeal to professional customers who do a lot of traveling and also aimed at getting the jump on the summer backto-school shopping season. H-P rolled out the H-P Mini-Note, a small laptop that when closed measures about 1 inch thick, 6.5 inches wide and 10 inches long. The Mini-Note comes with an 8.9-inch screen, two USB ports, a keyboard that H-P says is 92 percent the size of that on a standard desktop PC, and is built into an aluminum case. Robert Baker, a notebook product marketing manager for I \-P, said the Mini-Note is being targeted at commercial customers and students, for whom mobility as well as space restrictions are areas of concern. "Size is becoming more of a necessity," Baker said. "But die tradeoff has always been size for price or for capabilities." The Mini-Note runs on either Microsoft Corp's. Windows Vista operating system or Linux. The Vista version starts at $599, while the Linux version comes with an initial price tag of $499. Michael Gartenberg, vice president of research as Jupiter Research, said 11-P's success with the MiniNote will likely depend on how much marketing the company puts behind the laptop, and if customers can put aside some of their preconceptions about die ultra-small PC category. "I think it can succeed as a second or third PC in the house," Gartenberg said. "One of the things about the PMOlOSOUKf !•: PAUL SAKUMA ASSOCIATED PKfcSS Christine Wright of Hewlett Packard Company holds one of a new class of miniaturized HP laptops called "netbooks" in San Francisco, Thursday, April 3, 2008. U.S. is that here consumers have historically tended to go for larger PCs." Baker said H-P is releasing the ,'v] Lni-Note now in order to get lined up for when education departments begin making their purchase for the fall school season. H-P says that industry research figures make it the No. 1 notebook company in die world. H-P doesn't release exact quarterly sales figures for its notebooks, but for its most-recent quarter, which ended in January, H-P reported a 37 percent increase in notebook revenue from the prior year.
