Show The Signpost Page 10 Constitution continuedfrontpage4 My next piece of advice is that Layne should probably take a math class as well. Three thirds makes upone whole. Now, if Layne meant this in the ironic sense, as in the entire state of Utah supports Bush, then he is just wrong, and his attempt is discursively violent It is obvious, by The Signpost pictures alone, that Bush is not supported by everyone in Utah. Saying so functionally erases dissenters from existence, at least in theframeworkthat you have set up in your letter. Now, if you realize that your argument has no warrants, the wise move would be to AT LEAST refute the warrants in the other person's argument Attributing responsibility to take care of Katrina to others ignores Hodges' , article specifying an 80 percent cutback in the funds to develop better protection for the city, this argument undercuts Layne's offense. If Bush had truly "saved the situation by being pro-active" he would have heeded the fourday warnings from the hurricane and deployed the necessary help to Louisiana BEFORE Katrina hit, or he could have just kept the money that existed to re-enforce New Orleans' protection for its intended purpose. Your letter makes no answer to either of these statements. Layne makes it sound as if Bush was on the ground pulling people out of the flood personally. The reality is quite the opposite; what he DID do is sign a piece of legislation giving $10 billion in aid, about a 10th of what engineers quote as being needed to reconstruct the city. In allfairness,I do understand Layne's position. Bush is a very busy president; after all managing an increasingly unpopular war HAS to be emotionally draining. No joke, vacationing is probably the best way to recoupfromsuch stress. Hopefully Layne will develop a litUe more argumentative maturity before his/her next written oration blasting The Signpost for its liberal bias, but my pessimistic nature suspects his/her infancy will progress. - Ryan Cheek, WSU junior Get a Leg up on your Career Have you ever wanted to be your own boss?
