"I think if a lot of people who have committed suicide or violent crimes could see what they leave behind, they wouldn't do it," Helton said. "They leave behind great sadness, great grief. They leave behind family and friends who don't understand. They leave behind family and friends who have to deal with it for the rest of their lives, wondering if they could have done something to prevent it. The person who killed themselves is dead - they don't have to deal with it - but they leave behind people who do." Prevention is important when dealing with patterns of violence. Duong's friend and others who cared for him tried to help. They sought out counselors and support gToups in an effort to help him. Duong, however, did not accept their assistance. "If you are a friend of someone and you are concerned that they might harm themselves or someone else, talk with them and express concern," said Lisa Jones, WSU Counseling and Psycho logical Services staff psychologist. "If you really feel concerned that it could escalate, call the police, file a report, let them know of your concern." Jones said, "Give the friend some counseling resources or some other professional help that they could use. It is a really tough situation; there is no way as a friend that you can predict whether or not they are going to do anything."
