The Dee Events Center and the Weber County Ice Sheet are only a few miles away from the Weber State campus. They share the same humongous parking lot. The venues can be accessed from Harrison Blvd. at 4400 S., Country Hills Dr. at Taylor Ave. or 4600 S. at Old Post Rd. Although the Dee Events Center is rich in history and a state-of-the-art facility to host Weber State sporting events, it's the Ice Sheet that is getting recent attention from WSU students. The Ice Sheet is home to the Division I and Division II hockey teams. Although the venue hasn't been completely packed for the hockey games this season, the feeling at the games is still electric. Bone crushing body checks, crisp passes, rapid skating and, of course, incredible goals provide an atmosphere the fans can really grab a hold of. In DI and DII games, players and coaches mention the key advantage is to have such loud and passionate fan support. This was apparent earlier this season when Minot State University came into town to face off against the DI team. They played a Thursday night game in Salt Lake City that was not well attended - fewer than 50 people were there. Surely attendees couldn't hear a pin drop, but they could hear expletive followed by frustrated expletive coming from the players on the ice. The 'Cats squeaked out a 5-4 win against a team they said they should have killed. The next night's game was played at the Ice Sheet in front of fans who were loud and intense - the 'Cats won 8-2 in front of goaltender Andy Osikowicz. After the game Osikowicz said that the fans were, great and gave n i o j o i i i M. |ARED WILMELMSEN | Tl If W.WOST Members of a dodgeball team fight for a ball at Ultimate Indoor in West Haven. There's" plenty of hockey played with drop-in' hockey for more experienced players and stick-and-puck hockey for those just, starting or wanting to try out the game; - there are multiple sessions per week, for both activities. Of course there is public skating almost, daily and a skate rental located at the. facility. Many WSU students see skating as a good date option, being a bit more, original than dinner and a movie. Although some of the first-time public, skaters might not notice something like the qualify of the ice, many agree that the ice surface is one of the best. "We have the greatest ice from Logan, down to Provo," said Gay Fryslie, Ice Sheet supervisor for over four years. "We have, people that come from other states and say 'this is the best ice I have ever skated on.'" Some activities for students to, participate in, that a lot may not be aware', of, are broomball, figure skating, speed skating and curling. The Ice Sheet was the" official venue for the curling events at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. The Dee Events Center has been a' part of WSU athletics for a long time. Since 1977, it has hosted numerous" sporting events for students and alumni to enjoy. It is currently home to' men's and women's basketball, as well as women's volleyball. The 12,000-seat facility is one of the' largest in the Big Sky Conference andprovides the right setting for WSU to excel. The obtrusive purple seats are sure to remind the opposition who really has the home court advantage. a / ' " • " . ' . « « .INSPIRING THOUGHT •• \-'. • . ' ? : . • - . .
