Show Earl still keepirV it clean after 35 years By MELISSA McGARY correspondent | The Signpost You see them on the basketball courts, on the football field, and on the tennis courts - star athletes that are in the spotlight. These athletes aren't the only people working hard to help the team win. Coaches, fans and players' families also contribute. At Weber State University, there is another person that works his hardest to contribute to the teams. He isn't in the spotlight, but what he does for Wildcat athletics deserves recognition. Earl Bullock began his career at WSU in 1967 when he worked as a ball shagger Lunch Dinner Late night PIZZERIA 42nd & Harrison Blvd. 627-1920 for the baseball team. He continued in this position for a couple years until he was offered a job with the athletic department as the assistant equipment manager. Once there, Bullock found his niche and has been working in this position for the last 35 years. Bullock is now the senior staff member in the athletic department. As the assistant equipment manager, Bullock has several duties. He is responsible for all of the laundry that the sports teams use. This includes uniforms, warm-ups, towels, etc. On game days, Bullock also makes sure the teams have coolers and towels in the locker room. Tom Shurtleff, Weber State's equipment manager, describes Bullock's job as a constant stream of laundry. ; . "Laundry, laundry and more laundry is what Earl does during the day," Shurtieff said. Shurtleff sees Bullock as a great contribution to the athletic department. "If Earl doesn't do his job, the athletes will suffer/' he said. Bullock does his job, and he does it well. Shurtleff describes Bullock as devoted and dependable. Along with Shurtlcff, " Bullock also believes that his job is important to the athletic department. "It's very important. It has to be done every day," Bullock said. "Sometimes it's hard to stay on top of things, but I do it anyway." Bullock is a devoted supporter of the athletes he works with. He feels wins and losses right along with the teams. Bullock loves his job. lie enjoys working with the people and the athletes. His favorite sport changes with the seasons. "It's football right now," he said. "And when it is basketball season my favorite is basketball."
