KeyBank HAKVt* some things we need to work on early in the season, but so far things are looking pretty good." The games over the weekend have to be put into perspective for the Wildcats. WSU plays in Division I of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, USU and Utah both play in the lower Division II. "This win doesn't mean anything," said WSU's Chris Cotsillis Saturday night. "We have a lot of work to do to get ready for better teams, but we're starting to gel together and figure out who's playing good with who. We just want to gel and go from there." Some of that gelling has come out of necessity. Cotsillis' regular linemates Dane Ludolph and Anton Volkov both sat out of Saturday's game. Ludolph broke a bone in his hand in practice a couple weeks ago and is expected to miss some more time, while Volkov was serving a suspension. Cotsillis lined up alongside Nick Micek and Michael Spawton. The three found a lot of success, scoring some goals on pretty passing plays. Cotsillis scored three goals for the hat trick. WSU fans failed to throw any hats on the ice, but Cotsillis was OK with that. "I wasn't disappointed," Cotsillis said, "definitely not. It doesn't matter to me. I just want to put the puck in the net." WSU's Dave Lorenzen also scored a hat trick in the game. Spawton scored two goals. WSU's Kyle Gover was solid in net, making some big kick saves. Aside from not honoring the hat tricks, WSU fans were into the game. A lot showed up, making the Ice Sheet very loud at times. "I thought it was pretty good," Treasure said, "especially for a homecoming game. I thought we had a good turnout. It looks like people had fun out there." A lot of the fans were on their feet for the majority of the game. "I didn't know what to expect," Becci said. "I heard the crowds get pretty stacked. I didn't expect it to be that big. It was just a lot of fun playing out there on the home ice." The Wildcats have the coming weekend off, their next game will be Oct. 5 when Utah State comes to Ogden to face WSU. The Wildcats aren't looking past Utah State, but have bigger games to worry about in the near future. Dl-powerhouse University of Oklahoma comes to town Oct. 12. The Wildcats won't be facing as many DI teams this season as in past seasons. They will need to show their stuff against the Sooners to prove themselves as DI contenders, Comment on this story at wsusignpost.com. Soccer continued from page 6 The 'Cats wrapped up their weekend with a loss to Creighton on Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Neb. WSU out shot the Blue Jays 1513 but only got three shots on goal, while CU would get eight on goal. "We didn't play well and I don't know if it was tired legs or we just didn't move," McCoy said. "We didn't possess the ball, didn't win the ball in the air, so it was just a rough game for us. Hopefully we learned something from that game. We just have to play all 90 minutes." The Jays would net their first and only goal in the eighth minute when Marcy Gans passed the ball up to Emily Orbell who beat Victorine for the eventual game-winning goal. The Wildcats would mistakenly give the Jays a second goal when Ashtyn Webster headed the ball into her own goal when she was attempting to clear the ball out of the goal box. Victorine posted five saves in the game but the 'Cats dropped to a 3-4-1 record to the Jays' 5-3-0. "We leave for Hawaii today," McCoy said, "and we hope to have some good outcomes there and to change some things that we did wrong with Creighton." WSU will head to Hawaii for a game on Friday against the University of Hawaii, then they will play again on Oct. 1 against BYUHawaii. The Hawaii games will wrap up non-conference play for the 'Cats. Weber State University's Natalie Ellis-Blaylock collides with an opposing goalkeeper in a game earlier this season. Standing Out continued from page 6 the former Olympic Venue that is our Weber County Ice Sheet. The arena can be louder and the fan support can be better. So get the word out. Next time, don't wear shorts I know. The 91-degree days of summer aren't very far removed, but that doesn't mean you should wear shorts at the ice sheet. Professional hockey arenas have high-tech ice cooling mechanisms underneath the ice so that the playing surface can stay cool while heaters can run throughout the rest of the arena. The Ice Sheet does not have such high-tech equipment. The arena has to stay cold so the ice stays cold. If the arena gets too warm, the ice gets soft, huge ruts get in the ice and the puck starts to roll. So wear pants, bring a blanket, guzzle hot drinks or stay warm jumping up and down while you're in the student section at the next game.
