The North Center, which opened its doors in November to the public, is aimed at reaching residents of northern Weber County. Just off I-1 5, the Pleasant View building is also readily accessible to the industrial park in the :ii"Oa. "It's been amazing," said Helen Handley, coordinator for WSU-North. "Residents just seem to be really excited about this location." However, despite plans for at least 1 1 classes, for the debut semester of the center there are just nine classes being taught in the two-classroom, one-computer lab location. The reduction stemmed from lack of enrollment, which Handley attributed to inadequate advertising. Only three of the nine math, graphic design and manufacturing classes were listed in the Spring class schedule. The faculty to teach the classes will come from the main campus, much like many faculty members do for the Davis Campus in Layton. "Because this is a new center, we only have nine classes, we hope to expand," Handley said. "Eventually, I hope we'll have a lot more classes and space." The location, at 1590 West Park Circle, was initially set up in collaboration with the employers in the industrial park to provide courses to further employees' education as required by the employers. "We had a need to educate people who wanted to have technical training," said Mike Liptrot of Parker Hannifin Corp., one of the major partners in achieving the new center. There were almost 100 individuals who showed interest in a North Center when the idea was devised almost a year ago. Lacking other facilities, students attended classes beginning last summer in a makeshift classroom at Parker Hannifin. But classes are now in a more appropriate place, geared only for education, according to Liptrot. Most of the classes are scheduled for two or three hour blocks at night, so during the day the facility will also be available for other functions, such as corporate training and seminars. About a dozen professional development and training sessions have been scheduled during spring i ........ ; "". . , ,L..,.; ;.. i I i i -.5- a.. - 5 h IT. "J ! 4 --- r 2 - f - - -. ;; j-i.ii - . Beyond serving the businesses in the area, the new center also is a beneficial change for the residents. "I've had people who came in because they saw the sign out on the road," Handley said. "I'm really excited this facility is in the north end of the county." "People could come here to learn to register online, learn how to access the campus more easily through technology," said Stacey Campbell, who works in Continuing Education. The computer lab, equipped with 18 computers, in addition to other designated registration computers in the office, are directed for WSU-North student use. They are also available for all WSU students and community members interested in learning more about WSU, according to Brian Stecklein, director for Continuing Education.
