Show -It i Residence halls gives students sense of community By Jared Olson news writer-The Signpost This semester 481 students have made the Weber State University residence halls their home, including students from 16 different countries, across the United States and, yes, even Utah. The challenge is for everyone to become acquainted and get along with each other. "The diversity of residents really enhances the college experience," said Residence Hall Director Fiona Schroeder. Part of the Department of Housing Services mission statement is to "...facilitate individual growth and encourage a sense of community responsibility."To accomplish this mission, 17 resident assistants are hired and trained to help students adjust to their new home. Each RA is required to plan four programs during the semester to involve the residents in community development and community service. To promote community development, Wasatch Hall RA, Thegn Wise, gathered up his residents and had a graffiti party where they papered the hallway and spray painted it. Other activities have included gathering up residents to attend a WSU soccer game or getting together to play games in the recreation room. Programs like this help the residents get to know their neighbors and have some positive interaction. Last year residents provided community service to organizations such as the Ogden Rescue Mission, Deseret Industries and the Ogden Animal Shelter. This year's projects are still in the planning process. It is not just the activities that entice students to the residence halls. Residents like Melissa Jones and Paul Henrichsen chose the residence halls because of the proximity to campus and the lower cost of living. 'The transportation and access to campus is great," Henrichsen said. However, living in the residence halls is not without its challenges. "It's hard learning to live with someone from a different background," Jones said. Living in close quarters generates various complaints about things such as loud music and smoking in the residence halls. No matter what the problem is, the residence staff are available around the clock to work it out. "The attention that we give to each student and thestudent-to-staff ratio sets us apart from other university residence halls," Schroeder said. She adds that the staff's goal for the 1998-1999 school year is, "Building community in the residence halls." ' y-M TTTTTT F'T"? TTTT T7TT1 r Thur. & Sun at 8 s5 1 Vj f Uj Fri. & Sat. K jr l win?!
