Show Wood seem lo grow much throughout the play is Jaek. Joey Khotirv lines a marvelous job keeping the nimble-headed Jack innoeem and unaware. Though he tries at times to break away from his overbearing mother. Jack remains a boy searching lor a friend till the end. Forced to deal with the death of his mother, young Jack finally finds that friend in Little Red, who now carries a knife and wears the skin of the w olf she and her grandmother killed. The Giaiil's wife is played by Kali Paul, and though the audience never actually see's her, her presence is felt through her strong voice. Cinderella's mother is another beautiful portrayal of a character who is not seen entirely, whose presence is vital to the story. This is done well by Kristen Morgan as the deceased mother. Paul Draper narrates the story wonderfully. He adds flavor and spice to spots that could be considered less exciting than others. Draper is a familiar figure, sitting on his toadstool throughout the musical and adding a comfortable feeling to the production. The mysterious man who turns out to be the Baker's father is played by Luckey Heath. Heath's gravelly voice is nothing short of magnificent as he speaks and sings his lines. The audience's favorite characters seemed unanimously to be the two princes. Rapunzel's prince, Daniel Simons, and Cinderella's prince, Wes Whitby, both gave standout performances. The pompous arrogance of the characters came out beautifully in both portrayals. When accused of being unfaithful, the Prince replied, "I was raised to be 'charming.' not 'sincere.'" As the two princes end up with Snow While, played by Morgan, and Sleeping Beauty, played by Paul, the audience is reminded that if one does not grow and honor commitments, the same thing happens over and over again. The costumes were beautiful, the sets were magical and the performers were wonderful. "Into the Woods" was a professional production to be proud of. Director Jim Christian is to be congratulated. Adele Greenleaf and Gerriene Killian agreed. "I thoroughly enjoyed the performance," Greenleaf said. "I am always amazed at how good student productions can be." Although Greenleaf said she usually only attends two to three productions a year, "Into theWoods"-reminded her of how much she enjoys WSU productions. Lauren Poorte, a WSU sophomore, said she attended the musical because she enjoys theater and knew some of the students on the production crew. "It was really amazing," Poorte said. "They've done such a good job with the sets. And the costumes are really nice." Poorte also said, "1 love Cinderella." Many agreed. Comments were heard at intermission and after the performance about Cinderella's costume. For those who missed this magnificent performance, take heed. The department of performing arts docs a fantastic job with theater. iU A K E S ID SUB 389 so. The Academy Awards, which air March 2 1 on ABC, represent the outstanding performances of actors, directors and a variety of technicians involved in film making throughout the year. While as many as five nominees are presented in any given category, only one will leave with the Oscar in hand. While this year's nominees represent the best motion pictures of the year, very few would be considered box office smashes from an economic standpoint. "Shakespeare in Love," which received 13 nominations this year, hardly compares as a money-maker to last year's "Titanic," which received 14 Oscar nominations. While "Shakespeare" is considered a favorite in several categories, including best picture, several surprise nominees were presented, making it hard to predict this year's winners.Perhaps the most surprising nominees are from "Life is Beautiful," an Italian film with English subtitles The film was nominated for seven awards, including best picture and best actor. Roberto Benigni, the film's direc-- tor and producer, was also nominated for best actor in a leading role, making him the only foreign film maker Mirch 2'K I ', 7 1 "Shakespeare in Love" a heavy to be nominated in several different categories. Other nominees for best picture include, "Elizabeth," "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Thin Red Line." In addition to best picture and best actor and actress in a leading role, are two of the most coveted awards of the evening. Tom Hanks, who was nominated for his performance in "Saving Private Ryan," is a favorite among movie-goers. Gwyneth Paltrow is also a favorite for actress in a leading role. Not only does Paltrow play the female lead in "Shakespeare in Love," she also plays the role of a man, which makes her one of the most versatile females nominated.Geoffrey Rush was also nominated from "Shakespeare" for best actor in a supporting role. While the cast of'Shakespeare" is stellar, other established actors have once again been nominated in a variety of other films. Streep received a nomination for ,her performance in "One True Thing," and Kathy Bates was nominated for supporting actress in "Primary Colors." While actors seem to be the main focus of the Oscars, the music of the films is also an exciting category."I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," from "Armageddon," has been nominated for best original song. Awards will also be given for best sound, best dramatic and best comedy scores. The Academy Awards are not just important for those in the film industry. Clothing designers are responsible for making the night a fashion show, as well as an awards ceremony. Many designers work to have top actors and actresses sport their latest fashions.
