This display features sculptures, and functional and decorative examples of ceramic art from a variety of artists across the state in the Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery until Feb. 18. By Kendra Allred a&e editor The Signpost Most people know V-day for its chocolates, hearts and roses, but for some, the day stands for much more. To them, the "V" in V-Day doesn't just stand for Valentine; it also stands for vagina and victory. The V-day campaign is a movement to stop violence against women and girls. As part of this, the Associated Actors and Technicians (AAT) of Weber State University performs Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," the play that sparked the entire campaign. AAT president Merideth Hinckley directs along with Babs Delay of Salt Lake City. "The Vagina Monologues" is comprised of a series of personal stones and reflections of women and girls who suffered, or even died, because of violent acts. They are all based on actual interviews with women of all ages from across the world. Because of the sensitive nature of the subject, the play is for mature audiences only. "It's really funny," Hinckley said. "It's also really heartbreaking at times. It can be a little unnerving a first because you're talking about really personal things but that goes away and you just get wrapped up in the stories of the women." The performance will be reader's theater which means the performers won't have their lines memorized, but will instead give a dramatic interpretation. "They talk about women who are black, and who are lesbian, but we're not really becoming the characters; we're just reading the stories," said WSU junior and performer in the play Allison Holtkamp. The performers include WSU students and faculty as well as members of the community. "I think it should be a requirement for every woman around the world to read this or see it performed, because it is a really great way for people to realize that their feelings are shared, even the ones that we don't talk about," Pappas said. "It instills comfort." This performance is part of the V-day College Campaign, which encourages colleges and university to give benefit performances of this play for local charities dedicated to women. "I'm really excited for the opportunity to do some good, especially through art, because I think it is a really powerful medium," Hinckley said. All proceeds go to the WSU's Services for Women Students and the Domestic Violence Assistance Center attheYCC. "I am thrilled that we are included in this event," Marcus Perry, Domestic Violence Assistance Center manager, said. The YCC is a nonprofit organization, so Perry said they .rely on the community to help them provide the much-needed service. Money donated goes directly to their program services. "Events like this are great to increase awareness about domestic violence and that it is a problem in our community," Perry said. "When die community comes togedier, we can definitely make an impact." The performance is Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wildcat Theater of the Shepherd Union Building. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. You can reach reporter Kendra Allred by calling 626-7105.
