Show A&rE A&E Editor: Jake Christensen Phone: 626-7105 Downtown venues don Old West trappings By Jake Christensen a&e editor The Signpost The Ogden Pioneer Days festival culminates today and Wednesday in downtown Ogden. The cities concrete and asphalt environs will give way to old-fashioned western trappings and sentiments via a parade and special events. Starting Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. on 31st Street, the Ogden Pioneer Days Parade will travel up Washington Boulevard to 20th Street. The parade will boast roughly 100 different entries including antique automobiles, youth marching groups and horse drawn carriages. The parade will also offer traditional fare like marching bands and floats. Bleacher seating will be available at 25th Street for attendees. Peery's Egyptian Theater and the Ogden Eccles Conference Center will host events today starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through Wednesday afternoon. These include the Festival of Western Arts & Culture, the Utah Western Film Festival and the Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering. The art show and film festival are free. The Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering costs $8 for adults and $3 for youths. The art show, which includes items for sale, takes place in the David Eccles Conference Center. Twenty-eight different artists will be present. Their works include oil and watercolor paintings, native weavings and jewelry, photography and saddles. There will also be works utilizing wood and taxidermy. The art show is billed as a casual, "come-as-you-arc" event. It will run today from 1 1 a.m. until 8 p.m., and tomorrow from 1 1 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering, which runs approximately two hours, occurs tonight at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday at noon. This year's gathering features four prominent cowboy poets and musicians. One in particular, Joni Harms, received the 2000 Best Female Western Vocalist award from the Academy of Western Artists. She has New Releases Austin Powers in Goldmember (PG-13) This is the third Austin Powers movie, again starring Mike Myers in the title role. Powers and his new resident-babe Foxxy Cleopatra battle it out with Dr. Evil, Mini-Me and the enigmatic Goldmember. The film includes time travel,state-of-the-art makeup and bathroom humor. The movie also stars Michael Cainc, Michael York, Beyonce Knowles and Seth Green. Jay Roach, who directed both previous Austin Powers films,directs. also had one of her songs, "Cowboy Up," recorded by Chris LeDoux. Cowboy poetry participants read original poetry about ranch life and other quintessential western subjects. Every month of the year gatherings are held throughout the west from Kansas to California. "The themes are universal, with a heavy emphasis on nature, history, folklore, family, friends and work (especially danger and tedium), as well as delight in the language itself," said Tom Mayo in a column for the Dallas Daily News in April 2001. The film festival will feature "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." It directly follows the music gathering both days. People who purchase tickets to the gathering will have guaranteed seats to the film, which offers freefirst-come-first-serve seating. Robin Macnofsky, the arts festival coordinator, pointed out that events have been organized with all-day festival attendees in mind. "The events are strategically timed to play off each other," Macnofsky said. Rounding out the remaining activities is an authentic cowboy camp in the Eccles Center Courtyard tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. There folks can enjoy barbecue in a real chuck-wagon setting. Author Lee Nelson will be on hand both afternoons to sign copies of his latest book showcasing the Mountain West. He will sign today from 1p.m. until 3 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 1 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. At 1 p.m. he will give a lecture on Butch Cassidy. Admission to this lecture is free. Finally, parched festival-goers can visit the Daughters of the Utah Pioneer Museum located at 2148 Grant Ave. Wednesday at noon. The museum will host a special open house complete with homemade lemonade and sugar cookies. According to museum volunteer Nola Nagel, lemonade and sugar cookies were favorite pioneer treats. Movies The Country Bears (G) The first in a long line (pending profitability) of family films based on Country Bear Jamboree. The story follows the experiences of Beary, a 10-year-old adopted bear cub, who lives with a human family. Beary, determined to find out where he belongs, joins up with the Country Bears in Tennessee. Keen of keeping the movie's running time under two months, filmmakers have opted not to depict Beary 's hibernation, the cast includes Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Walkcn, Dicndrich Badcr and Julianne Buescher. On Thursday evening, the All Horse Parade proceeded down Washington Boulevard, including a horse drawn carriage carrying The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Queen, and her first attendant (above). On Friday morning the Children's Parade, including from the Ogden area, passed by the Egyptian Theater in the heart of downtown. Children from the Marshall White Center danced their way along the parade route (right). The Children's Parade also included clowns and mascots. Smokey the Bear waved to parade goers from atop a truck (bottom). The two weeks of festival events culminates Wednesday with the third and largest parade, the Ogden Pioneer Days Parade. The parade begins at 9 a.m., starting at 31st and proceeding north along Washington Boulevard to 20th Street.
