"Our admissions is the reverse of the economy," said Dotty Harpool, director of the MBA program at Wichita State University. "When the economy is bad, our admissions go up." For example, WSU had 170 students in its MBA program for the 2001-02 school year compared with 140 for the 2000-01 year. The next session promises to be busy as well, Harpool said. Don Hackett, director of the Center for En-trepreneurship at WSU said there has been a "tremendous increase" in interest in the center's course offerings. "Our credit hours are going to almost double this year over last year," he said. Hackett said the center has signed up 411' credit hours so far for this fall compared with 268 this time last year. "You always see an upturn in enrollment when there's an economic downturn and so you'll have a number of students because of the economy or the loss of a job or the threatened loss of job go back to school," Hackett said. The other factor is almost a disenchantment with the corporate world. In recent years, the center has noticed more people expressing a desire to take their future into their own hands, Hackett said. The Small Business Administration in Wichita also has been busy with inquiries from people hoping to open their dream business. Attendance at a business development exposition in January hit a record at 300 people, said Iris Newton, public information officer for the SBA in Wichita. "We are getting a lot of telephone inquiries, too," she said. And approved loans are up 38 percent so far this year compared with the same time period last year. Yo be wrinkled as Students decided to stop their protest after FSU President Sandy D'Alemberte agreed to their two demands: to meet with a representative of the Workers Rights Consortium, an advocacy group that would monitor the factories that manufacture FSU-licensed products, and to guarantee that 12 students arrested in March will not be expelled or suspended from school. "It's not a victory until we join the WRC, but it's definitely on the way,' said Tony Williams, one of the group's leaders. The protesters said they backed off their initial demand that FSU affiliate with the consortium after they realized they were not making progress toward that goal, despite their camping out. That coupled with a growing intolerance of "tent city" by university administrators and an increasing number of students forced protesters to rethink their strategy. The group was under fire from administrators worried about campus safety and fellow students including former supporters who wanted the land in front of Strozier Library returned to its usual summer use of frisbee and u're going to all get-out!" football games and sunbathing. But Gabriel Pendas, one of the student protesters' chief negotiators, said that it is the minority view. Protesters, he said, received vocal support from passers-by. And the sad truth is most FSU students did not care one way or the other, he said. "FSU is not KOA," Police Chief Carey Drayton told protesters when they outlined their new demands in a Tuesday afternoon meeting with school officials.
