"People are worrying about offense and we stopped playing defense, which has got us here," said Carla Taylor, WSU coach. Sheila Robertson and Crystal Howe scored 1 1 and eight points, re spectively, in the first half to lead WSU. Carrie Spencer made all her first-half shots to lead PSU with 11 points. The score was knotted at 33-all at halftime. WSU managed to build a six-point lead on two different occasions in the second half, but PSU tied the game for the 15th time with 5:26 left. The game saw 10 lead changes. "We were able to answer them when they pulled ahead," said George Wolfe, PSU coach. WSU suddenly found itself in a five-point hole as Sarah Hedgepeth made a lay-up and Jane Gowans made a three-pointer for PSU. Howe made a free throw to cut PSU's lead to 60-56, and 45 seconds later, Karsen Muller made a lay-up and drew a foul. She completed the three-point play to pull WSU within one point at 60-59. "The one-point lead stood up, amazingly," Wolfe said. With seven seconds left, Julie Gjertsen blew past her defender and shot WSU's third missed lay-up of the second half, which would have given the Wildcats a one-point lead. WSU was forced to foul with three seconds left, and Hedgepeth sank both free throws to give PSU its three-point margin of victory. Montana State University lost its game Saturday as well, keeping the Wildcats' hopes of hosting the Big Sky tournament alive. "I don't know how many lives we have," Taylor said.
