Show 5 Sports Editor: Mike Browne Phone: 626-7983 X Golf in Ogden not just for rich people f Mi's Snorts IjTsL, Mike Browne : sports editor 1 - If the high cost of golfing is keeping you away from the sport, you might want to check out a couple of courses close to Ogden. If you have the money but don't like to golf, well, I'm sorry. Here are six courses, all within fifteen minutes of Weber State University: Golf City As we all know, the lowest score wins in golf. For the lowest green fees, go to Golf City, where it costs six bucks to play nine holes. Par for the 1,1 14-yard course is 27 strokes. You can also practice at their driving range, or bring the family to the 18-hole miniature golf course. If you need to practice your baseball or Softball swing, there are batting cages at Golf City as well. Mulligan's Mulligan's is next on the list of cheap golf courses. It costs $7.50 to play nine holes, or you can play the newest three holes for $3.00, or you can play all 12 for $10.50. The first nine holes cover a patriotic 1,776 yards; par is 31 . Mulligan's also has two 18-hole miniature golf courses as well as a driving range with a two-tiered, heated addition. The WSU golf teams use the heated area to practice their swings when there's still snow on the ground. Other Ogden-area oralmost-Ogden-area courses I've played aren't as affordable as Golf City or Mulligan's (green fees are $10 for nine holes at each of the following four courses), but if you're willing to shell out a couple more dollars, I highly recommend them. I'll start in North Ogden and move south. Also, I'll go alphabetically. THE The Barn The Barn is a pretty 18-hole course with moderate. to light hills and water. I'll admit that you end up having to hit the ball twice as far as you do at Mulligan's, but that's the price of getting more strokes. To be precise, The Barn's 18 holes cover 6,016 yards. Par for all 18 holes is 71. If you're like me and can't predict where your ball is going every time you hit it, I suggest taking it easy around the houses and Pleasant View Drive at The Barn. I don't think I could ever understand why someone would, on purpose, want to live next to a golf course, unless they're thinking of the free golf balls that find their way into the backyard once in a while. There's always the danger O A T M XJ r JLVl Golf Club Si'm,!1 '"-i. ' y that one of those free balls might hit a child, a pet or a window before coming to rest. Anyway, please take it easy around houses and roads, and know that you, the golfer, are responsible for any damage your errant shots may cause. C f' C i i in iii. in lilt A im ii a- Ben Lomond Ben Lomond is a nice, flat 18-hole course with wide, open fairways. It lies on 5,778 yards and par for the course is 72. It's a good place for people like me who need a little extra space to allow for hooks and slices while teeing off. Even if the ball goes out of your fairway and past the rough, chances are good it will land on someone else's fairway. I've had this undesirable lie, thanking my fellow golfers for waiting while I hit my ball back to the appropriate fairway. There are no hills at Ben Lomond to speak of, just slight inclines. Oh, there's one more thing. At Ben Lomond, look at the map on the scorecard before teeing off on each hole. Without the map, it's easy to not see the water. One minute, you think you have a ball 280 yards up the fairway, and the next minute you find your ball in a lake. The lakes are deceiving. El Monte El Monte is a 2, 871 -yard, nine-hole Ogden City course next to the Ogden River Parkway, at the mouth of Ogden Canyon. This course has great views of the mountains and a couple of steep hills to climb. With the uphill parts come some nifty downhill holes. In the morning the course catches a lot of wind from the canyon, which is good for some holes and bad for others. wHXkJ "vj.,. jXM Huge Cash Rebates (mail-in) Save up to 50 OFF SAVE 30 on Roofing Siding V .'! !! !'h '352' ,v. i l l ' i'.i l 11 2' Coverage 8' 10' 12' 14' 16' 20' "Not all Lengths in all colors When you need metal... Golfing at Mount Ogden is like playing through a forest. If you hit your ball into the trees, you're bound to find an ample replacement if you look around enough (something I don't suggest if there are other players behind you). I've heard that it is impossible to walk Mount Ogden. I don't believe it, because I've walked it before. I bought my brother his first set of clubs for $30 at Deseret Industries Thrift Store. My first set of clubs cost $80 brand new. If you plan to golf frequently, it's definitely worth it to buy your own clubs instead of renting them. I wore my old cross country Important Ogden area golfing digits The Bam 305 W. They get the job done. If you don't want to buy golf shoes, most other shoes work just fine. If you're like my brother and you enjoy driving a golf cart, most courses charge around five dollars to rent a cart for nine holes. If you want a good workout, hoof it.
