For baseball fans, last week should have been memorable because two of the greatest players of all time. Dennis Eekerslev and Paul Molitor. were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. However, much of the attention that these athletes should have received from the media, and the fans should have been privileged to enjoy, was stolen aw ay by Pete Rose's admission in his recently released book. "Prison Without Bars." that he gambled on Cincinnati Reds games while he was the manager. Fourteen vears after being banished from baseball for life. Rose has admitted to committing the cardinal sin in baseball: gambling. Even worse, he did it on the team he was managing at the time. He insists he never bet against the Reds, but alter lying to the world for more than a decade, w ho can believe him? Thanks to so many die-hard Rose fans, a movement has commenced to get him a spot in 5 Cooperstown and reinstated by Major League 2 Baseball. o True, based on his stats alone, the guy should Z be in the Hall. Nobody has more base hits in s baseball history. However, as part of the election j process the league insists that the athlete up for o election displays the highest degree of character Z and that's where Rose falls short. 2 This has been discussed plenty by my cohorts S in sports journalism.
