Show 4 Naval experience helps Carrillo on gridiron Mike From page 10 By Trent Hadlcy sports writer-The Signpost Whether it be driving a submarine for the United States Navy or driving an opposing quarterback into the turf on tlie football field, Weber State University's Santos Carrillo has found both experiences to be exciting and rewarding. Originally from Monterey, Calif., and a senior currently attending WSU studying technical sales, Carrillo was recruited out of North Salinas High School where he starred on the football team and received All-Amcrican recognition for his play at tight end. Many universities sought after Carrillo's talent including San Jose State, Cal Berkeley, San Diego State, Georgia, Montana State and WSU. However, after playing football for one year at Hartnell Junior College, Carrillo elected to join the United States Navy. "I decided I had to grow up. I needed to make a change in my life," Carrillo said. "I didn't know what I was going to do in the future, and I thought the Navy would do me some good. I love the ocean and the sea, so I decided to join the Navy." While serving in the Navy for a period of four years, Carrillo reached the rank of yeoman second class. Carrillo's responsibilities mainly consisted of administrative duties such as pay, evaluations, mail and leave among other tilings. Carrillo did, however, have the opportunity to drive a nuclear submarine during die Gulf War. "We went down there toward the end of the war for a peace mission," Carrillo said. "We bobbed around for a while; it was pretty exciting." After completing his naval service, Carrillo chose to attend WSU, where he could once again pursue his dream of playing collegiate football. Many factors contributed to Carrillo's decision to play for the Wildcats. "My home is California, and I knew I didn't want to play in California, but I didn't want to go too far away either," Carrillo said. "I came here on my recruiting trip, and everyone was great. It was a lot of fun, and it's beautiful here. I love it" Carrillo feels his experiences in the Navy have helped him immensely both on the field and in the classroom. "The Navy helped me learn more - -- - i v r! s - - f 6 : Santos Carrillo (93) lines up for action during practice. responsibility and how to get the job done as an individual and as a team," Carrillo said. "In the submarine, if one guy screws up, you're all going to go down. It's the same thing op the football field. If one guy messes up in coverage or i f another guy doesn ' t pick up a block, then the other team is gone for a touchdown or an interception." Carrillo will be playing defensive end this coming season. In Saturday's Purple and White Game, he had one unassisted tackle. "I think we're going to do really good this year," Carrillo said. "Everyone's really pumped up, and the coaches are extremely motivated. They make you want to go out there and practice hard." there than the Bulls do. As of Game 3, San Antonio had played with more energy than the Jazz. Besides the Spurs, another old foe is looming for Utah and looking very dangerous. The Los Angeles Lakers. Shaqzilla and the rest of the "Lake Show" seem to be peaking at the right time, and the Jazz have only truly clicked for the last six quarters of its series with Houston. The Lakers have shown hunger and desire so far in the playoffs, as well as (surprise) poise and smarts. When LA is on, they are tough to beat. Just like every year, this isn't Utah's year. So why don't the Jazz get rid of the lame slogan tradition? Remember "This is our year" in 1995? Instead of "Feed the fever," how about "Forget about it," because it's not going to happen. . .. . , !CTi..-vr, lir -.Tr.-u.
