By 1984. over 100,000 refugees were living in Mexico alone. During this time the United States was focusing their attention on Nicaragua, and no one realized that a "secret war" was happening in Guatemala, according to Ibarguen. By the 1980s, the para-military of the Guatemalan government, known as the "Death Squad," exacted justice swiftly. People who associated themselves with the poor were hunted down and prosecuted. University professors, students and educated Mayans were targeted. Anyone associated with the Guerrilla Army of the Poor was a suspect. "Though the leaders of Guatemala know what is happening in their country, many of the people have no idea what is going on," said David Amado, the second speaker and Brigham Young University student. "The average person doesn't have any idea what's going on. Family members and friends have been killed, missing or evacuated due to threats on their lives. Gabriela describes an uncle, who was a medical doctor, doing his internship in a small village. The Guatemalan military came in and massacred many of the residents. As he was trying to save the villagers, the officers approached him and said he had to help the military. He declined because they already had doctors in the military. "When my uncle got back home, he received a call that told him that if he, his wife and eight-day-old baby didn't leave within 24 hours, they would all be killed," Gabriela said. "He's been living in California ever since and has no intentions of ever coming back." Ibarguen said, "It is said that Americans will do anything for Latin Americans except get to know them." By 1987 the United States could no longer ignore the brutal atrocities escalating in Guatemala. Amnesty International is seeking the aid of the United Nations to stop the atrocities in Guatemala and is asking the United Stales to help intervene for the human rights of the people of Guatemala. Amnesty International is also asking the public to write letters to protest what is happening in Guatemala. The address is: Lie.
