Show Students to be recognized for performance By Tiffany Thomas a&e writer-77ie Signpost While students spend the years struggling to make a difference in their respective fields of study, the Weber State University Department of Performing Arts takes a little time at the end of each year to reccognize that extra work. To this end, the performing arts department will host its annual awards banquets May 26 at 7 p.m. at Jeremiah's Restaurant on 12th Street in Ogden. Students are recognized and awarded scholarships on the basis of service and performance. Department chairman Michael Palumbo will be the Master of Cerimonies for the evening as well as presenter of awards. "This night will be a lot of fun," Palumbo said. "It's a goodnight to recognize not only outstanding students, but people in the community who have given assistance by donating money for awards and scholarships." Director of the performing arts department Caril Jennings said anyone is invited to attend. "We usually have about 150 people attend each year," Jennings said. "It's almost like a small-scale Academy Awards night." Many awards will be given such as Outstanding Freshman, Best Choreographer and Service to Department. Awards will be given in all areas of music, dance and theater performance. Two secret prestigious scholarships will be awarded that evening: the M. Thatcher Allred-Scholarship and the Sophie Wepherill Reed Scholarship. Thatcher Allred was a speech and drama teacher in the '40s, '50s and '60s. This scholarship will be given to an outstanding senior for their entire career at WSU in the theater department. Sophie Wepherill set up her scholarship before she died, and her children have augmented the funds for the scholarship since then.
