Fielding Signpost design editor Antelope Island State Park is looking for a number of volunteers tohelpstaffoneofthestate's most popular and unique state parks. Those interested in learning and sharing information about one of Utah's most historic homes are invited to attend a training session at the park's Fielding Garr Ranch House. Park personnel will conduct training for people interested in acting as volunteer interpreters at the ranch house in 1996. - The Fielding Garr Ranch House, built in 1848, is the oldest pioneer structure in Utah still located on its original location. Garr built the house after being commissioned by Mormon Church President Brigham Young to manage the church's tithing herd, which was located on the island. "We'll provide all the training people will need to answer visitor questions," Park Ranger Ann Evans said. Training will be held March 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Once'trained, interpreters will serve a minimum of four hours a month. "Our interpreters can serve for more hours each month, but four hours is the minimum commitment," Evans said. The ranch house is open for public tours one to two weekends a month March through October.8 7"Vecycle I X. Participate! J ) ! Park staff will contact interested individuals and provide additional information about the training. In addition to the volunteers for interpreter positions at the ranch house, the park is seeking mountain bike and horseback riders for the park's Backcountry Trail Patrol. Volunteers will be asked to ride the trails at least one weekend a month April through September. "Volunteers provide several vital services to the park," Park Ranger Rick Reed said. Volunteers are available on the trails to assist trail users and answer questions. They also protect the island's sensitive natural resources by educating people about the resources and monitoring trail use. "We're counting on our volunteer trail patrol to set an example for other trail users of responsible riding while in a backcountry setting," Reed said. Those interested in becoming a member of the trail patrol can contact Reed at 773-2941. The park's visitor's center will be opening during the first part of the summer, possibly in June, he said. Specific staffing needs have not been worked out yet, but it is possible volunteers may be needed to help staff the visitor center after it opens this summer, Reed said. if"' .
