Based on the accounts of a single man, "the disappeared" had most likely been taken to death camps where they were systematically tortured and then executed, he said. As the investigation continued, Escobar began to hear rumors of a massacre in which the Peruvian military tortured and executed innocent farmers in retaliation for a terrorist attack on military units the previous night. "The evidence we were finally able to obtain clearly showed that the military was responsible for the massacre," Escobar said. Also, Escobar was able to secure a witness who had seen the commanding general in the emergency zone take part in the massacre, he said. ap, nimnnnl ('nmniiinir;ilmnv rnmn.inv 'sL C tWl bi Firunouol tklwrv Ml Rich).
