The game was dominated by tough defense, including four interceptions and seven sacks. Defense dominates scrimmage By Jared Page Signpost sports editor It'sbeensaid that defense wins games. If that is true, the scrimmage held Saturday morning in Wildcat Stadium should give fans of Weber State University football a lot to cheer about this season. The defensive squad dominated the second scrimmage of spring practice, totaling seven quarterback sacks and grabbing four interceptions. Defensive ends Obie Spanic and Jason Jensen each had their share of quarterback take-downs. Spanic registered foursacks, while Jensen had three. "Our defensive intensity was the best it has been this spring," head coach Dave Arslanian said. "We are getting some excellent senior leadership on that side of the ball." Offensively, the three quarterbacks had their share of struggles. Bryan Martin and Roger Cook spent a considerable amount of time, on the ground, and Rob Westervelt was picked-off three times. Westervelt said that the quarterbacks are just not as familiar with the receivers as they need to be. "Wejusthaven'tgotten together enough to know what they are : t going to do. It will all come with time." The Wildcat offense did manage to score three touchdowns, the first coming on Westervelt's 70-yard completion to wide receiver Joel Pelagio-Williams. "There were times when we were able to get things going, but we still haven't put it all together offensively, " Westerfelt said. Wide receiver Norvel Young had a productive day as he pulled down three touchdown passes. The Wildcats will practice three days this week before showcasing their talent at the annual PurpleWhite game at 7 p.m. in Wildcat Stadium. |
