Show ports 3 Backcourt Club gains three new members By Jared Page Signpost sports editor Past and present Weber State University v basketball greats got together Wednesday in the Alumni Center as the WSU Backcourt Club met to honor last season's three seniors.Robbie Johnson, Elroy Miller and Johnnie Moore were recognized for their outtanding achievement on the basketball court and were inducted into the club and honored with a plaque. "You just get them so they can play, and they go on to bigger and better things," Coach Ron Abegglen said of his seniors. "We are back on the winning track and "i- hopefully, the new guys can continue that next season." Johnson, a 6-foot guard out of Seaside, Calif., has spent four years at WSU, beginning in the 1990-91 season. Each year he has improved his scoring and assist aver-age, and was the team leader in both cat- egories this season. "I've had a great four years here," Johnson said. "I really hate to leave here and to stop playing basketball for Coach Abegglen. He's been like a father figure to me. If anyone asks me about Weber State in the future, I'll have nothing but good things to say." Johnson is majoring in business marketing and will test the international basketball market this summer after he gradu ates. If he does not receive an offer to play basketball professionally, Johnson will return to WSU and become a graduate assistant and work with the basketball team. Like Johnson, Miller played all four years for the Wildcats, being the team's defensive leader and an outside shooting threat. He averaged eight points a game last season and played an average of 25 minutes per game. Miller, who hails from Battle Ground, Wash., was named the Southwest Washington "Player of the Year" after his senior year at Battle Ground High School. Miller led his team to a third place finish in the Washington State high school tournament. He was also the captain of that team. "When I first saw Elroy play, I thought he was too skinny to play, but he proved me wrong," Abegglen said. "Elroy always had the task of guarding the other team's best player." Miller met up with some tough competition this season as he had the assignment of guarding Purdue's Glen Robinson and Idaho's Orlando Lightfoot. Majoring in business marketing, Miller has compiled a 3.1 GPA while at WSU. "I have a lot of good memories here," Miller said. "If I could go back and do it all over again, I would do it all the same way." Moore, a communications major, came to WSU for the 1992-'93 season from Tyler See Backcourt page 8 . - J- . 4, t--" "J.
