Write to St Mary Lodge & By MIKE SHIRRA Signpost sports writer Johnnie Moore is starting his first season of basketball here at WeberStateUniversity. Moorewas recruited by the Wildcatsafter playing two years at Tyler Junior College in Tyler Texas. Moore first came to WSU last April on a recruiting trip to get a look at the university. He later signed with Virginia Commonwealth University, but when that didn't work he reconsidered his scholarship offer from Weber. "I wanted to come here in the first place," Moore said, "It was one of those things where everything fell into place. I wound up here and now everything is great." Moore said he is fortunate to be able to play collegiate basketball. If he had not played, he might not have had the opportunity of going to college. "Basketball has done a lot for me," Moore said, "If it wasn't for the sport, I would n' t have been able to go to school." Defense and rebounding are Moore's strengths on the court. This year's Wildcat team is ranked second in the conference in rebounding. Much of the credit is due to Moore's rebounding. His average is close to a conference-leading ten Resort, P.O. Please, please contact me CL V. - f Johnnie Moore rebounds per game. Moore said that his favorite part of the game is getting up high and rebounding the ball with authority. "Rebounding is the best part of the game," Moore said. "Offensive rebounds are a lot harder to come by, so it's satisfying when I get one of those. I'd rather rebound than shoot." Moore said tha t this yea rs team is quick, aggressive and has set certain goals to improve ball handling and free throw shooting. "If we can accomplish these goals, we could be unstoppable," Moore said. "We're working on these things now and we're getting better and better as each game goes ASSIFI through the Signpost. Moore said that some of his short term goals are to win the conference championship and hopefully get to at least the "sweet sixteen" round of the NCAA tournament. Working hard between seasons, graduating with a degree in communications broadcasting and possibly play i ng pro fessional sports after graduation are some of Moore's long term goals. "I definitely want to get my degree in broadcasting; I'm on course for that," Mooresaid. "After graduation I'd like to play professional basketball in the NBA or for a team overseas." Moore noted that a lot of his inner strength comes from the example shown by his high school basketball coach James Remedies. When he was 15, Moore moved from Michigan to Louisiana and found it difficult to adjust. Remedies helped him throughsomedif-ficult times and introduced him to basketball. "If there is anyone I've got to make it for, it's him. He took me under his wing and got me playing basketball," Moore said. Moore said that he is capable of doing a lot more for the team. He feels that his strengths off the court are being an example to the other players and having an overall positive attitude. ED proof business. Hot new $ maker.
