Show Tuesday, July 2, 1991 THE SIGNPOST rial Edifo Pave paradise; put up a By Jim Sawdey Editor-in-chief of The Signpost The faculty at WSU petitioned the President's Council to cease plans to tear out 40 feet of lawn and pave it to create 40 visitor parking spaces. The plan would have extended the Al parking lot, including a motorized arm for restricted access to the lot. While the move by the faculty is commendable, it didn't go far enough. Signers of the petition cited philosophical reasons for posting the petition, saying too much green area has already vanished from campus. They pledged to give up their privileged parking area in front of the Social Science and Administration building for an A 10 space in front of the Browning Center for the Performing Arts. Where they didn't go far enough was extending their example to the Dee Events Center, where free parking by hundreds of students and some faculty has made room for more people to park nearer to their classrooms and offices.Had they said they would park at the Dee Event Center, it may have encouraged more students and faculty to do the same. Instead, many will buy A10 stickers and receive some of the best parking on campus. While in itself, this isn't bad, it must be remembered that faculty and staff have "first-right" privileges to sticker purchases. They will buy up as many as 32 parking stickers that students will no longer Patrons must decide whether to continue overhead music in the gym; Writer seeks public opinion If you have visited the new gym lately, you may have noticed a recent change. The Physical Education Committee has decreed that the music on the overhead loudspeaker system in the gym shall cease. I feel this is an issue that needs to be addressed by the students of WSU. Since the new addition opened last July, music has been played regularly over the loudspeaker system. I have been a frequent patron of the facility, and have enjoyed vintage rock, rap, dance, modem, metal and soul while working out. I enjoy the music, I feel that it facilitates activity and movement, both of which are reasons to go to the gym. Music also helps me to "get The Signpost Staff Edltor-ln-chief Managing editor News editor Sporti editor Ami. Sporti editor Arts editor Asst. Former ASWSU president Doug Peterson, who helped craft the original proposal also suggested that the petitioners and others park at the Dee Events Center or maybe purchased a W lot sticker. Some have suggested Peterson's remarks show a desire to punish those who want to keep the grass on campus. That misses the point. It's not an act of punishment to ask people to park at the Dee Center. In an act of foresight to ease the congestion into" what I'm doing. I feel music is a positive thing. Others feel the music overhead is a distraction and an annoy ance. They don't like the music, and apparently enough have spoken up to cause the situation that we now have. The staff at the Wilderness Recreation Center controls the loudspeakers. They have always been courteous and kind in adjusting the music that, whether it was a volume problem or not quite the style of music that I desired. They have also been fair, the stations changed often according to the whims and tastes of the patrons. I have suffered through some styles that I don't care for because I know Jim Sawdey Lorin J. A shuttle bus leaves every 10 minutes delivering people very close to their destination at several points on campus, including the Browning Center. A campus should be a special, unique place, a place of contemplation, meditation and discussion, one petitioner decried. It should also be a place for setting good examples. that eventually something that I like will be played. Some avoid the issue altogether by bringing a personal stereo to escape into, and I'm sure that there are some people who don't even notice the music playing. I am inviting all the HPERD facility users to make their voices heard. There are two clipboards located at the Wilderness Recreation Center window, one for Pro-Music and one for Pro-Silence. While you are signing into the facility, take time to let your opinion be known. I 'm sure the powers that be are anxious to hear your views.
