Show 6 THE SIGNPOST Tuesday, July 16,1991 Liquid Jesus combines opera, poetry and heavy metal By Jennifer Harding Asst. Arts editor of The Signpost I'd like to say that the newest compilation 'Tour In The Sky," by the punkrockopera band Liquid Jesus, has changed my thinking about categorizing bands. They are so diverse that it would be foolish to even try. , "The Intro," is very entrancing with its post-modern opera sound. Immediately, one becomes captivated by the militant guitar licks on "Finding My Way." On "Finding My Way," Liquid Jesus proves they are a band of semi-poetic metal heads shown constructively with lyrics like: "A thinking man doesn't take charge he whispers wisdomand acknowledges loves embrace.. .let the heartbeat of the music take you through the day day by day." Even though Liquid Jesus has been together since 1988, they have recently developed a following in Los Angeles with this release. The group's songwriter and guitarist Todd Rigione, elaborated on "why now," in an MCA press release."Our direction is a little more in focus now...on our live album the band's debut recording released on Koosh Vinyl through Triple X Records in 1990, we just opened everything up and played to the best of our abilities." LIQUID JESUS POUR IN THE SILY UCA RECORDS Disc On another cut, "The Colored Ones," the focus is seen quite well. The sound is clear and the lyrics are well written to fit the lanky, somewhat melodramatic croonings of lead vocalist, Buck Murphy. In "The Colored Ones,"he bellows "I exude my happiness Avoid the malice of othersAs the riptides of my mind carry me away From the shores of my brothers." On "Pour in the Sky," the band experiments with lots of adventurous sonic twists and periodically uses familiar artists including keyboardist Bruce Hornsby. They also use operatic backing vocals on many of their songs. "When the idea of "The Intro," came to me, I had just learned what the word mellifluous' meant. I was very impressed with this beautiful sounding word. I looked it up in the Oxford Dictionary, and one of the definitions said 'sweet sounding.' I wanted to name the album mellifluous," said songwriter, Rigione. The lyrics shout "It's important to listenNot necessarily to me It's important to be heard And not just on T.V." Throughout the rest of the album we see the diversity of this band emerge fully. On 'Tor Better or Worse," the folkblues side is divulged. Lyrics like "I'm a man who likes to be freeTake my time and choose the roads I pleaseCall me crazy," poetically describes feelings felt when his decision is made to commit to the life of a working musician. "Feeling Flower," accompa nied by Bruce Hornsby on piano, is full of dissonant metal sound. Yet, the immaculate lyricism is like getting the best of both worlds. For example, poetic bedazzled is heard in lyrics like "Feeling flowerTrees reach with rain plunging down Empty, starving thoughts in my mindDevour a silent soul." According to the press release on the band, the inspirations and influences that surface on the album are difficult to trace because the band members contribute various ingredients and rose from different backgrounds. Johnny Lonely and Scott Tracy, the bassist's and vocalist's W1UAM HAMESMCA for blending musical styles. for the band describe themselves as being like brothers in the band. Lonely was inspired by punk bands and Tracy by Kiss. As a teenage guitarist, Todd Rigione said he picked up blues chords and ideas from local musi-. cians in his hometown Seattle. Many critics call Liquid Jesus - "the next Jane's Addiction," a tag the band didn't agree with. I agree that they are something more individualized than any other band by comparison. If your ready for a band that will send sparks like a high-voltage power line then Liquid Jesus is just the band for you to acquaint yourselves with. Come Out North and Golf . . .
