Show I 8 The Signpost May 8, 1992 Mother's Day ...? By NOELLE GREENHALGH Staff writer of The Signpost As we know, Mother's Day was set aside for us to honor our mothers. However, many do not realize Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 10. This news probably sent many of you into a panic. I can hear you saying "it can't possibly be Mother's Day already," and "Oh no, what am I going to get her?" Hopefully, I will be able to ease your anxiety. Have you ever wondered of the origin of Mother's Day? Many years ago, a day for honoring mothers was observed in England. It was called "Mothering Sunday" and came in mid-Lent. Other European nations have also observed the holiday. In the United States, Julie Ward Howe was the first person known to suggest Mother's Day. In 1872, she suggested it be held June 2 as a day dedicated to peace. Howe held an annual Mother's Day meeting in Boston for several years. In 1887, a Kentucky school teacher, Mary Towls Sasseen, conducted Mother's Day celebrations. Frank I. Hering of South Bend, Ind., campaigned for the observance of Mother's Day in 1904. Anationwidecampaignforthe observance of Mothers Day was started three years later by Anna Jarvisof Grafton, V A. She started it in memory of her mother, who died on May 5, 1905. Jarvis continued to hold a memorial service for her mother and encouraged others to remember their mothers. Jarvis is credited for founding Mother's Day in the United States. Mother's Day received national recognition May 9, 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. He signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending the executive departments of the federal government observe Mother's Day. One year later, Pres. A colored carnation means the person' s mother is living, and a white carnation indicates the person's mother is dead. Now we have that little bit of trivia out of the way, what can we give our mothers? I doubt there is anything in the world we can buy, to tell our mothers how much we appreciate the way they have inspired us, helped us, loved us, and made who we are. We need to realize our mothers love us, and any gift we give, no matter how largeor small, will mean the world to them. No matter what we decide to give our mother, it will be an expression of love that will be adequately expressed. There are many different things to get mom for the big day. Most mothers already-have everything? You might get her something she normally wouldn't buy herself. For those students whose mother's live out of state, you can send her a card and flowers. "I'm going to send my mother FTD flowers," said Christine .Lindley, a WSU student whose mother lives in Texas. The greatest gift you can give your mother is to tell her ho w much you appreciate and love her. WSU student Greg Fitzgerald said, "I'm going to give my mom a great big hug, a great big kiss and a great big 1 Love You'." You only have a few days left.
