Show May 1, 1992 The Signpost Weber's annual Purple and White football game on Saturday V. - i : v. SPRING FOOTBALL: The last WSU spring football practice before the 1992 season begins in August will be the Purple and White game. By CHRIS RASMUSSEN Sports writer of The Signpost After 10 days of contact practices, the WSU football team is prepared to show their fans a view of what to expect during the upcoming 1992 football season. Atthe annual Purple White intra-squad game which will be held on Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Wildcat Stadium, WSU football players will suit-up and scrimmage against each other. This will be the first time before the 1 992 home season opening game against Southern Utah University that fans will be able to see a guaranteed WSU victory. Head Coach Dave Arslanian and his coaching staff believes the success of next years season depends on the achievements made from the beginning of spring practice which began on April 11, until season practice resumes in August. "Depending on how we finish-up spring practice, and how each of the players train during the off-season and the condition level they come back in for fall practice will determine how the regular and post season will go," said Arslanian. "Because of the overall talent and experience we have on the team already, there is no reason why we shouldn't win every game," said Quarterbacks Coach Rich Ericson. "As coaches, we have been treating the weekly scrimmages as mid-term tests," said Arslanian, "and Saturdays game is considered the final. It is the best way for each of the players to show the coaches, other teammates and themselves what they have learned and improved on since last season." "During the spring practices, we have been making a point to use as much 'game attitude' mentality as possible," said Arslanian. "This is to give more experience to the players for next season." V CHUCK BOWHAYTHf SGNPOST WEBER'S LAST SPRING football practice before the annual Purple and White game on Saturday at 2 p.m. In the Wildcat Sadlum. "The intra-squad game on Saturday will be try to be as competitive as possible, although precautions are being taken to prevent injuries," said Defensive Line Coach Robb Akey. "While no new offense or defensive systems will be revealed at the game, it is an opportunity for the players to show their progress and shine." One player who is expected to shine very bright is quarterback Jamie Martin. "Jamie has been doing a good job this spring. He is continuing to work on the basics and the few weakness that he has and strengthening his ability," said Arslanian. During the 1991 season, Martin broke many Weber State, Big Sky Conference and Division 1AA records and was recipient of the Walter Payton Trophy, which is an equivalent to the NCAA Heisman Trophy which BYU's Ty Detmer won in 1990. "Hopefully, he won't have to be as productive as he was last year" said Arslanian. "It isn't that I don't want him to be as successful, but I hope that as a team we won't make it necessary for him to score 20 points in the fourth quarter. Or if he does do that, we win by more than 4 points, as in the case of the Eastern Washington University game last season." While Martin has been be selected as the starting quarterback, Coach Ericson has also been working on passing and running plays (See FOOTBALL page 8) CLASSIFIEDS This newspaper is not responsible or liable whatsoever for any claim made by an ad in this newspaper or for any of the services, products or opportunities offered by our advertisers.
