Show Friday, January 17, 1992 The Signpost 7 ports WSU searching for athletic director Temporary interim director should be named early next week By KELLY FARNSWORTH Asst. Sports editor of The Signpost Rumors are floating around about a replacement for Richard Hannan, who resigned as the Weber State Athletic Director on Jan.4. Hannan left Ogden to be Athletic Director at South West Texas State. According to Weber State President Paul Thompson it , shouldn't be a long search. "Dick Hannan did a good job and it's a loss to have him go, so we need a good replacement," Thompson said. "We have received a number of phone calls and nominations all of qualified people and are going to go about it in the way we found a new basketball coach, we will appoint a small screening committee and try to find the most qualified person," he said. Jeffery Livingston, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs agreed. "It will be better if we find the permanent replacement sooner than later, but we are conducting the normal process of a National search, which may take time, but Wildcats to face Vandals By JAMIE MARTIN Sports writer of The Signpost Rebounding could be the key in tomorrow night's Big Sky basketball battle between the Idaho Vandals and the Weber State Wildcats at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho. Weber faces a very strong rebounding team in Idaho and how they do on the boards may determine the final score. FOR SALE '82 CHEV CITATION, Auto-Air, PS.PB New paint, $1090. Call 745-1619. ' '-' we hope to fill the position soon." said Livingston. Though no information was given on who is being considered, Livingston did give insight on the process of how the new Athletic Director will be selected. 'There are a few things I think are important in the process," said Livingston. "One is to contact the Athletic Department staff, Head Coaches, and to get their feelings and concerns with an Athletic Director leaving, and also ask them what criteria they think should be used in the selection," he said. Livingston said the athletic department asked the university to designate someone as an interim athletic director until the position is permanently filled. Thompson said should be put in place early next week. When asked what criteria and qualifications will be used in the selection process, Livingston referred to the skills Hannan used while athletic director at Weber State. "Dick did a nice job, he did a fine job in the areas of bringing a professionalism to the department. "We're small," said Coach Ron Abegglen. "We haven't been getting it done on the boards." Idaho is second in the league in rebound margin, while Weber is second to last. The Vandals are out-rebounding opponents by an average of 6.4 per game; while the Wildcats have been out-rebounded by 1.4 boards per game. Idaho, as a team, is very similar to coach Abegglen's squad because they play three guards most of the time. "They are like us, but they are Laurie at 399-0275 or 626-7507. HELP WANTED He also brought many of his good management skills to Weber State, and did a good job of maintaining the department within budget," Livingston said. Although Hannan's commitment to the student athletes and his requirement of high academic standards are significant qualities the University is seeking in a new athletic director. Livingston noted that a good knowledge of athletics is obviously an important qualification. "Before coming to Weber, Hannan was both a basketball coach and an athletic director at Lewis-Clark State College." he said. Livingston noted that other managing skills could transfer into this type of job. For example, two other Athletic Directors in the Big Sky Conference were lawyers. "All in all we are looking for someone who has high external affair goals, someone who will promote competitive teams, promote academic standards, and run the program with integrity," Livingston said. in Moscow very tough inside," Abegglen said. Another key to the game will be the match-up of the number one and number two scorers in the league. Idaho's Orlando Lightfoot is leading the league at 22.5 points per game, but WSU's Al Hamilton is not far behind with 20.3 per game. "We won't change too much," said Abegglen about trying to stop Lightfoot. He said that they will just try to play good man-to- man team defense The advertisements in this section may or may not constitute offers of employment. After years of wooing the San Francisco Giants, San Jose city officials announced an agreement in principle to bring the team south. Under the plan, which must be approved by voters in June, the city 50 miles south of San Francisco would build a 48,000-seat open air stadium with natural grass in a public-private partnership with the team. The ballpark would be ready for use in the 1996 season, officials said. The city will provide $155 million and the Giants will chip in $30 million to acquire land and build the ballpark, with the Giants responsible for any additional costs. The Giants' lease at Candlestick Park, about five miles south of downtown, expires in 1994. San Francisco voters rejected new stadium proposals in 1987 and 1989. In November 1990, the 15 cities in Santa Clara County failed to approve an initiative to build a stadium in the city of Santa Clara. The MSG deal is worth an estimated $486 million over 12 years.
