The Weber State Office of Cultural Affairs is concerned with : encouraging and promoting the understanding and appreciation of culture. v According to The American Heritage Dictionary, culture is defined as: "3. The arts, beliefs, customs, : institutions, and all other products of human work : and thought created by a people or group at a particular time." For more than twenty-five years, Daniel Martino, director of Cultural Affairs, has labored to improve Weber State's and the community's understanding and appreciation of culture by bringing to Weber world-renowned symphony orchestras, chamber orchestras, chamber ensembles, classical ballets, choral groups, operas, folk festivals, theatre, convoction speakers, musical groups, bands, and soloists. Weber State is the only ' (stress only) campus in the whole state of Utah to be certified as a (See PROGRAM page 9) Diana Grueninger, Weber State's newest faculty member in the Department of Performing Arts, will be performing her first faculty recital Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Allred Theater of the Browning Arts Center. Admission for this recital is absolutely free! Diana Grueninger will perform a sonata program consisting of Mozart's Sonata in E Flat K. 282, Prokofiev's 9th Piano Sonata, and Chopin's Sonata in B Minor. Dr. Grueninger is director of Weber State twenty-five years of experience as a teacher of piano students of all ages, and as a solo and chamber musician. She has taught as a graduate assistant at Indiana University and the University of Northern Colorado, and on the faculties of Frostburg State University in Maryland, the University of Oregon, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and the Wisconsin College-Conservatory. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music degree in piano from Indiana University where she studied piano with Sidney Foster. She recently completed a Doctor of Arts degree at the University of Northern Colorado. While at Indiana University, she received academic and performance scholarships and the Ruth Tourner Schilling award for outstanding ability in voice and piano. Her Bachelor's degree was awarded with highest honors and the Master's degree was given with distinction. At the University of Northern Colorado, she held the Cadre position on keyboard. She was a piano student of Rob Hallquist and a harpsichord student of Laura Smith. Dr. Grueninger brings to States and abroad. Dr. Grueninger has performed widely in the United States. While a resident of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf, she was a concert artist for the State Department, under the auspices of the United States Information and Communication Agency, and for the British Council in the state of Bahrain. She has extensive experience as an accompanist and a chamber musician. She was a founding member of the Yellowstone Chamber Players in Montana, an active performing group. She has also performed with British cellist, Leslie Ismail and Canadian violinist, Jack Glatzer. She has appeared as a soprano soloist with the British Council Choir in Bahrain and with the Eastern Montana College choir. THINKING OF MAJORING IN GEOLOGY AT WEBER STATE Susan Duncanson Thiros did. She graduated In 1985. Susan Is now a Hydrologlst with the water resources division of the U.S. Geological Survey In Salt Lake Cltv and Is the author or coauthor of studies dealing with the ground water hydrology ot the Pahvant Valley, the hydrology of a coal field In the eastern wasatch plateau, and the geohydrology of Bryce Canyon and the south central high plateaus of Utah. Currently she Is working on a three dimensional digital ground water model of the Panqultch Valley.
