Show 16 THE SIGNPOST Wednesday, October 3, 1990 Volleyball spikes it to ISU By Arlinda Galvin Staff writer of The Signpost The WSC women's volleyball team was victorious against the University of Idaho Saturday night in the Dee Events Center. "We had to play real tough as a team. It was an outstanding performance from everybody on the court," Weber State coach, Lesa Moore said. Playing as a team seems to be the key to winning games for the Lady Wildcats. "With each person playing hard, we can beat anyone," Coach Moore said. This was an important game V for the Lady Wildcats as they are in a race to finish at least fourth in the Big Sky Conference. They are now 3-3 in conference play and 5-11 overall. Coach Moore stressed that even with this record the team is playing well because they have been playing against top-twenty teams. Their goal is to go on to the NCAA tournament later this year by winning the Big Sky tournament. Shannon Firebaugh, the only senior on the team, led the way with 32 kills and only 4 errors. Jana Jacobs was next with 23 kills. Debbie Horton and Jana Nelson had 17 digs each. "We passed really well tonight and played as a team," said Jacobs. Coach Moore said that the team is playing exciting volleyball right now and they need the support of a home crowd. They may see a crowd of 200 people, and they appreciate the support, but Coach Moore said that she would love to see a bigger crowd. "It was unfortunate that the football game was going on at the same time," Moore said. The Lady Wildcats will be back home on Tuesday to play Brigham Young after road trips to the University of Idaho and Eastern Washington University this week. MIAMI (continued from page 14) SEC executive associate commissioner Mark Womak said it is league policy not to comment on its dealings with specific schools, but said, "The decision made by a particular institution is obviously best for that institution." The deciding factor, Foote said, was the relatively low number of Miami students coming from the SEC area and the high number coming out of the Big East's northeast turf. "Student concentration alone is as big a factor as there is," he said. Jankovich also mentioned things like academic compatibility, rules compliance and television exposure for the athletic program. But Miami also needs to know how the Big East's turf will be divided. The Big East has been trying to accommodate Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Boston College the league's Division I-A football independents which would like to join a football conference but don't want to lose the Big East's huge basketball interests. While no one from the Big East will comment on expansion plans, one theory has Miami entering the league along with football independents West Virginia, Sports Briefs RED SOX CLOSE ON CHAMPIONSHIP: The Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 Monday to clinch a tie for the American League East championship. That would create a seven-team football conference. Jankovich has said all along he prefers a five- or six-game league schedule, leaving a like amount of non-conference games. But a 13-team basketball league seems cumbersome and it has been suggested Miami could be the Big East's lone addition in basketball with Virginia Tech remaining in the Metro Conference and the other three schools in the Atlantic 10. Tranghese has said, however, he has not talked to any school but Miami, and officials from Rutgers, West Virginia, Temple and Virginia Tech could not be reached for comment. Jankovich said, however, that before Miami makes a decision, the Big East's plans on handling the additional teams "would be in the commitment."
