Show The Signpost - Monday, Jan. 23, 1989 11 'Cats beat Melanie Knott contributes as team player By Sean Firth Contributing Writer ISU By Kevin Lucas Contributing Writer The last two years in a row the Idaho State women's basketball team has come to the Dee Events Center and upset the Wildcats. The Wildcats won this one 73-61, but with the Weber down at halftime, 33-30, it looked like the Lady Bengals may make it three in a row. Then Katie Weyen-berg and Melanie Knott scored the first two buckets of the second half giving the Wildcats a 34-33 lead. Wildcat coach Carla Taylor said, "Our intensity level was flat in the first half and we knew what we had to do in the second half." After Knott's go-ahead basket at the 18:37 mark of the second half the lead changed hands four times with two ties before Lady Bengals' Nancy Imhoff tied the score at 48-48 with 8:59 remaining. Taylor said that Weber changed to a zone in the second half and slowly took control of the game. Weber State reeled off seven straight points to take a 55-48 lead and never trailed again, gradually building up to the final 12-point margin of victory. The final score provided the largest lead for the 'Cats. ' Idaho State Coach Ted Anderson said, "The key factor tonight was the play of the post players. Our post players were in foul trouble while Weber's post players had fouls to give." 1 . ' 3 '"Ni., A 1 '-"Whim -iktift Weber State's Melanie Knott is creating quite a stir for Lady Wildcat basketball followers so far this season. Apart from her impact statistically (she's averaging 15.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game), Knott has assumed the mantle that only very good players are able to shoulder. Knott has a special maturity she has an idea about the game and its pressures, whether in dealing with the sophistication of her opponents or the drudgery of long practices. She is what's known as a team player. sute thooUn uarlhohTa Knottcomes to Weber State from Stockton, California where layup hrel'haseena keypiayer sne attended St. Mary's High School. (The Signpost photo: Robeen Gillem) leadership and helping the Lady Wildcats get off to their best start in recent years. Knott believes that the quick start shown by the Lady Wildcats is due to the fact that the team is getting together so well and the new coaching staff has brought in a closeness with them that the entire team can feel. Coach Ann Handy-Jones has said, "She (Knott) is an extremely important part of the teams execution." Handy-Jones goes on to say that part of the reason Katie Weyenberg (the Wildcats' senior center) leads the conference in scoring may be directly related to the fact that Melanie has become a threat herself. Teams can no longer afford to double and triple team Katie with Melanie constantly knocking down 15 footers." The coaching staff refers to Knott as "the spark" for the Lady Wildcats saying that "no one in the conference can stay with her." As for Knott's goals, she says that she wants to play hard each night and keep intensity not only on offense but also on defense, and see the team keep playing like she knows they can. If team success is a measuring device, then Knott is indeed accomplishing her goals. Taylor echoed credit to WSC's post players. "Our post players are good, mobile, aggressive and want to score, and that gives us a good scoring balance between the outside and inside. Imhoff, whose father played for the gold medal winning U.S. Olympic basketball team and for several seasons in the NBA, was the game's leading scorer along with Weyenberg with 23 points. Dawn Lawler chipped in with 16 points for the Wildcats and Knott added 13. Weyenberg and Wildcat point guard Sheila Krahn led all rebounders with 12. Griz (cont'd from page 9) was too large to overcome. Freshman Jill Sperry came in and sparked the 'Cats with hustle and a strong 13 points, most of which came on long shots. Weyenberg and Lawler both finished with 16 points to lead Weber. Weyenberg also had a team high 14 rebounds, Lawler had 13. After her nine points at the half,'Scchawer didn't score in the second half.
