Show Signpost Friday, May 3, 1985 1 1 ; Weber State Theatre Department presents Arms and the Man by Chris Larscn Senior Reporter Weber State Theatre will have another sucessful production to add to their many accomplishments for this season, after George Bernard Shaw's Arms unJ the Man finishes next week. I attended the dress rehearsal Wednesday night, and if the production is anything like what I saw at the rehearsal, the audience is in for a delightful evening of laughter and entertainment. Arms and the Man is a delightful light-comedy, set in Bulgaria in the 1800's. For those who enjoy a good evening out, and even for those who don't, Shaw's humorous play is highly recommended. Many fail to recognize what fine entertainment and talent Weber State Theatre makes available every year. Arms and the Man is the story about a daughter of Bulgarian nobility, Raina, who is betrothed to Sergius, a major currently fighting in the Bulgarian Army. In the course of unique circumstances, Raina hides a Swiss mercenary, Bluntschli, in her room. After the war ends, Raina and her mother, Catherine, try to hide the secret from Sergius and Petkoff, Raina's father. Conflicts and confusion arise, making the situation hilarious. Director M. Seth Reines, a visiting director from Chicago who directed Fiddler on the Roof last year, has again done an excellent job bringing together a talented cast and crew. Reines brings depth to the stage set with a rare technique-a raked (raised and tilted) stage. .This romantic spoof shows some of Weber State's finest talent -not only in acting but in costuming and set design. The costuming was fantastic-authentic and realistic. J. A. Hanson, costume designer for the production, deserves much praise for his work. Detail was explicit in the ladies' dresses, from the bustles down to the bloomers. The set and lighting was also well done. THANK YOUR SPOUSE. He or she deserves a diploma also. Reines said Shaw used the play to criticize heroism, professional soldiering and social classes. Reines said he used a see-through stage set to correspond with the facade-type characters in the play.
