Show ITie Signpost - Monday, May 15, 1989 WSC students to participate in clean-up efforts By Donna Green Staff Reporter The Ulah Department of Transportation has designated this weekend of May 19lh and 20th for their First Trash Round-Up of State-Maintained Highways. The UDOT personnel and two of Weber State College's fraternities will be involved in the Trash Round-Up this weekend. The Weber State PIKEs and BETAs have adopted a stretch of state highway and will be working on Friday and Saturday to help peel away Utah's winter coverage of litter that has collected due to the number of state-wide litterbugs. According to Jim Johnston, Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator, "Adopt-A-Highway Groups are in the process of being contacted by mail and advised that May 19lh and 20th will be the designated day for them to assist in litter pickup this year." Johnston also said that the individual groups will be additionally required to participate in two other pick-up drives this year to honor their commitment as Adopt-A- Highway organizations.'These groups can schedule thcir other clean-up sessions at their convenience," Johnston said. The Adopt-A-Highway participating groups must agree to provide the litter control for a minimum two-mile section of State Highway at least three times a year for a span of two years. UDOT will be providing safety vests and trash bags along with a safety training course given prior to the Trash Round-Up day. Each member from the two fraternities participating will be required to sit through the training on an individual basis and upon finishing the course, must then sign a protection waver. Although this may seem like a lot of work just to prepare for a few hours of State Highway House Cleaning, both fraternities seem to be enthusiastic and ready for their day of beautifying Utah's roadways. "We've been working on getting ready for this since back almost last year," said. Chris Stout, BETA President. "We're really looking forward to this weekend." Following the first successful pick-up drive, UDOT will Community to help 'share the harvest' By Kathleen Montoya Staff Reporter Utahns Against Hunger is asking people to grow a little extra in theirgardens to be distributed to the poor in the fall, according to Ogden area representative Majorie McBride. "It's a matter of using surplus garden prod uce and fruit that people don'tneed to feed the hungry," McBride said. McBride has been involved in the "Share the Harvest" project for four years. In 1988, local gardeners and farmers contributed enough food to give a couple bags of produce to over 900 families. Early in August, Utahns Against Hunger contacts local churches to ask for contributions of food and labor.' Gardeners bring the food to the First Presbyterian Church on the last two Sundays in August and the first Sunday in September. The gardeners come from churches of all different faiths according to McBride. "We .try to make it a project for the whole community," she said. "A community of people who want to share and distribute food." "Sometimes, large commercial farmers let us (see HUNGER on page 3) JlfSv WANT TO HAVE FUN FALL QUARTER?
