Congratulations Treavor Moss. The Weber State College Department of Performing Arts presents' "The Majestic Kid" in the Allred Theatre, of the Val A. Browning Center, May 4-6, 11-13. Curtain time is 8 p.m. "The Majestic Kid," by Mark Mcdhoff, author of the widely acclaimed Broadway success and motion picture, "Children of a Lesser God," was first produced by the American Southwest Theatre Company in association with New Mexico State University in 1981. It was then presented by the American Theatre Company in Aspen Colorado, in revision during mid-1983. The WSC production is based upon the acting edition used by the Oregon Shakespearean Festival which was produced in 1985. This production will be Weber State's entry to the American Theatre College Festival. "The script was selected for production as part of the WSC Centennial year to help us examine a new perspective toward where we were and what we have become," said Dr. Ronald V. Ladwig, director for the play. "The Majestic Kid" is the story of Aaron Weiss, a young activist lawyer and his feminist classmate, Ava Jean Pollard. They have come to the Southwest to help the Apache Indians in protecting their land from exploitation by money interests from the East, who are looking for a site to use as a toxic waste dump. Aaron is played by Brad Schroeder and Kim Benesh plays the role of Ava Jean. They quickly run afoul of a redneck judge, William S. Hart Finlay, who is the most powerful man in the territory and who stands to profit from the land deal. Judge Finlay is played by Jason Tatom. As the battle lines are drawn, Aaron who in childhood had often fantasized that he was really "The Majestic Kid," a two-gunned hero devoted to fighting injustice, is joined by the model for his imagined persona a former movie idol named "The Laredo Kid," played by Shawn Nottingham. He now reappears (to Aaron only) to goad and counsel his disciple. "The language in the play is colorful, vibrant with innuendo and reflects contemporary Western expression," said Ladwig. Tickets for "The Majestic Kid" are available at the Dee Events Center ticket office Monday through Friday. Tickets are also available one hour before the performance at the Browning Center. The opera was accompanied by pianist Jacqueline Young who was magnificent. The set was simple, yet the limited space was used very creatively. Two exceptional performances were given by Lloyd and Smith. Their portrayal of two giddy sisters was extremely well done and gave them the opportunity to show off their exceptional vocal talents. The opera was done in, English which helped the audience capture the more subtle elements of the plot and satire used throughout the story. It . was a very delightful, entertaining introduction to opera.
