Friday's WSC Invitational was supposed to be a tune-up meet to prepare the Wildcats for the district and conference meet and the they appeared to be primed for a good showing at that upcoming meet Behind a strong overall team perfor-manance the Wildcats finished second at their invitational, losing only to the 10th-ranked BYU Cougars, and easily defeating Big Sky Conference rivals Boise State and Idaho State. The Cougars scored 21 points to run away from the field while Weber State came in with 44. Boise State was next with 75 points and Idaho State finished with 105. Southern Utah State rounded out the field at 134 points. This was our best meet of the year," said Wildcat Coach Jim Blaisdell. "We've kind of changed our training methods now. We have been doing faster kinds of things in trying to get tuned up for the end of the season. I thought it really showed today. "Boise State is one of the good teams in the conference and has been running really well, and we beat them really good today. In fact we had six girls in before their second girl was in." Nearly ideal weather conditions served to make times fast Friday. BYU's Ail-American Noeleen Mullan easily outdistanced the field on the 5,000-metcr (3.1 mile) course to win the individual title in 16 minutes 56 seconds. Her teammate, Nichole Birk, finished second, 27 seconds behind Mullan. Boise State's Kathy Karpel was the Big Sky's top runner and finished third at 17:25. Weber State was led by Weber High graduate Dana Willie who finished fifth overall at 17:51. After Willie the Wildcats came in almost one right after another. They took the seventh, ninth, 1 1th and 12th spots. Sophomore Laura Jensen was seventh with a time of 18:05 and freshman Emily Willem was ninth at 1 8: 1 0. Kris Cary, who graduated from Weber State last year, actually finished second, but his score didn't count in the team totals as he was running unattached. Chipman's winning time was 24:34. Dave Andreasen finished fourth overall and was the Wildcats' top runner at 24:49. Bob Durtschi was next for the Wildcats and seventh overall with a time of 25:18, while n J ' . ' i - ' ; ' . The Wildcats had defeated the Cougars twice earlier in the season, but the Cougars were supposed to be much improved and a close battle for the team title was anticipated. This battle never emerged, however, as a few Wildcat runners turned in slightly sub-par performances. tional with a fourth place finish. Dean Miller, 11th at 25:30, and Brad Barton, 15th at 25:30, rounded out Wildcat team scores. "We didn't quite run up to our capabilities," said WSC Coach Chick Hislop. "Our top three runners (Durtschi, Miller and Barton coming into the meet) are capable of running better than that." (see MEN on page 11) |
