Sports Editor Miguel Tola is in preparation for his second trip to the NCAA Golf Championship May 24-28 in Thousand Oaks, California. Tola was individually selected to represent District Seven on the merits of his play this season, particularly his play last fall. Tola is a business major from Lima, Peru' and will graduate from WSC this spring. "He has been working and practicing every day looking forward to the NCAA challenge," said Head Golf Coach, Mac Madsen. Madsen said that Tola's goal at the NCAA is to achieve All-American status. "In his mind he has resolved that he needs to finish in the top 30 at the NCAA championship, and he will automatically get All-American recognition," said Madsen. That means Tola must make it through the first cut after 36-holes and another after 54-holes. Tola was a qualifier for the 1986 NCAA Championship at Wake Forest , but he missed the final cut by three strokes. Weber State's best finish by an individual at a NCAA Championship came from Carito Villaroman in 1986 when he placed third.. Villaroman is a WSC junior from Isabella, Philippines. "Just this past year there were many times when Carito may have been the better ball striker, but Miguel would beat him . . , because Miguel believes so much in his putting," said Madsen. Madsen said it has been interesting to contrast the personalities of Villaroman and Tola. "Carito can pass through 18-holes and by his body language, I wouldn't have any clue whether he was two-under or 18 over par. But Miguel doesn't disguise anything; I can see from shot-to-shot and hole-to-hole how he's doing because he exposes his emotions so visibly," said Madsen. Tola had his best performances of the season in the fall and early winter tournaments. He placed sixth at both the Stanford Invitational and at the UNLV Rebel Classic. Tola also had three ninth place finishes, two in the fall and one in April. At the Wolf Pack invitational, Tola turned in the lo score for the final round of' play (73) in a hail and wind storm. Madsen said, There is no question that his play fell off after the fall. "Tola is a team leader, and when his performance fell off it was paralleled by the rest of the team. "As a team we seem to crest and ebb with his play," said Madsen. x Madsen said it was not scores that impressed him when he recruited Tola. "It was his style, confidence, aggressive attack and his philosophy that if he didn't make a good shot he should have," said Madsen. Tola's winning attitude came from his experience as a winner. "He won about everything there was to win in his home country," said Madsen. In the fall of 1986, Tola won the entire South American National Championship. "He beat the two-time World Cup Amateur champion from Argentina, and he was crowned the South American national amateur champion he couldn't have been more than 18-years-old at the time," said Madsen. Tola had to make an adjustments from being such a dominating winner in Peru and overcome his frustrations against a wider breadth of competition in college. "You don't want to take away his belief that he can win, but you don't want him to be so totally frustrated . . . every time he finishes fifth or sixth," said Madsen. Tola is the first player ever on the team from South America. "I think it's remarkable that he is graduating right smack on schedule," said Madsen. It's even more commendable with the foreign language barrier and all those trips," Madsen said. There hasn't been anyone on the golf team do that for five or six years. "I give him a lot of credit for doing something many players haven't been able to do," said Madsen. y OOP " CZ) ' All ISmm Staff, And Saw, lb!
