Show 10 S27 0S"Vednesday, May 25, 1988 Wizard of Weber enjoys working with individuals Lynn Martineau Asst. Sports Editor Chick Hislop has seen 19 successful years as Wcbcr State's head track and field coach. No, Hislop's teams haven't finished first in every Big Sky Conference track and field meet, but that's not really how he measures his success as a coach. "It's not necessarily the outstanding individual performances; it's having the opportunity to work with these great individuals. Not just the athletes, but all of the great people I've had a chance to work with throughout my career both at WSC and Ben Lomond High School." Hislop is known by coaches throughout the Big Sky Conference as the "Rule Book," the "Dean of Cross Country" and more recently as the "Wizard of Weber." "His main asset is that he is a student of the sport; he knows a lot about Chick Hislop technique and the rules of college track," said Assistant Track Coach Dan Walker. At this year's conference meet, the announcer called Hislop the Wizard of Weber because of his team's performance Qualify (cont'd from page 9) are close to the NCAA qualifying standard of 50.85 in the 400- intermediate hurdles. They will travel to BYU today to compete in the BYU Invitational in a last chance effort to reach this mark. Miller will try to join Cary and Williams in the 3,000-meter steeplechase when he competes in- the University of Oregon Twilight Meet this weekend. "I think Chowen has an excellent chance of qualifying," said WSC Coach Chick Hislop. "He was only threetenths of a second off of the mark in the Big Sky Championships and I think that he can do it." Chowen, a junior from Bountiful, ran the 400-intermediate hurdles in 51.14 in last weekend's meet. "Trane has an outside chance of reaching the mark," said Hislop. Trane ran the event in 52.8 in last weekend's meet Hislop is doing everything he can to give his athletes a chance at reaching the qualifying standard. "We are going to Oregon to try and get Dean (Miller) qualified," said Hislop, "because sea level altitudes are favorable tn Hictanre. runners." The WSC steeplechase team scored 24 of a total 31 points in the event. Hislop's expertise in the distance events stems from his history as a runner. "I was a distance runner in high school and college. Not a really outstanding one, but I was fortunate enough to be a junior college All-American while at Weber Junior College," said Hislop. "I was always a runner, but my times would hardly make a good high school time now." Hislop has developed many strong friendships with the athletes he has coached. "The successful athletes love him; they find out how much he works, and it rubs off on them. Some of the young athletes are intimidated by him, but after a year on the team, they find out how much he cares about them," said Walker. Once the athletes get to know Hislop, they are willing to give their all for him and the track team. Walker was coached by Hislop both in high school and at WSC and has a very close friendship with him. "He's one of the one or two most influential people in my life," said Walker. "Hislop demands that people give their best." "I love working with young people, and I'm very satisfied with my situation here at Weber," said Hislop. An Ogden native, he wants to continue coaching at WSC for as long as they will let him. One of his most memorable coaching achievements was Farley Gcrbcr's third-place finish at the National Steeplechase Championship. Some of Hislop's other accomplishments include three cross country conference titles and one indoor track and field conference title. His coaching efforts have also helped produce 13 track and field All-Amcricans. "Because of our limited finances, it's pretty difficult to have a well-rounded team. So I decided to take the areas in which I'm strong and try to develop the team around those areas," said Hislop. Those areas of strength are the distance events and the hurdles. In this year's conference meet, his team won 76 of thcir total 87 points in the hurdle and distance events. "I'd much rather develop an athlete than I would buy one," said Hislop of his recruiting philosophy. "Getting an athlete and seeing him develop and improve is always more fun than getting an athlete that has been developed by someone else."
