Show 10 Signpost Friday, May 2, 1986 Wildcats begin 1986-87 season i. by Michael J. Tupa Staff Reporter There was no one else on the sports field across from Promontory Towers as this reporter stepped onto the playing area last Wednesday. It was 1 p.m., two hours before the first outdoor spring football practice would begin there. As I walked across the damp field, the fresh grass crackled under my feet. Laid out on the ground in white chalk were two full-length football fields. In two hours, the air would be full of sounds of grunts and yells. The blocking sleds would jerk rhythmatically across the grass as strong shoulders crashed into them. The field would be ripped and scarred where football hopefuls collided in practice competition.Among those on the field would be many players from last year's squad, eligible junior college transfers, and hopeful walk-ons from the student body. These individuals will walk onto this field 20 times in the next 30 days, head football coach Mike Price said in an interview. They are there to be evaluated position-wise and should already be in shape from winter conditioning programs, he said. In terms of ability, the spring practice will "specifically get the players broken down," Price said. The positions Price is looking hardest at to fill are a center and defensive linemen. Every practice session will begin at 3 p.m. for the punters and kickers. At 3:15, the whole team will fall out for stretching exercises, and at 3:30 the players will be divided into eight groups according to position. J I ': M4X , . J-A- . 1 ? For the next hour, the assistant coaches will work with the groups, which include running backs, offensive linemen, receivers, tight ends, quarterbacks, defensive linemen, linebackers and defensive backs. While in these groups, the players will work on position techniques. At 4:30 p.m., the team will be brought together for scrimmage practice for an hour and then practice will end. This routine will continue until the last day of spring practice, May 31, when Practices will continue until May 31 when the Wildcats will wind up spring football with the an- these players will take on the alumni at 7 p.m. in Wildcat Stadium. For players who hope to appear in the stadium as part of the football team next fall, that journey will include many days of sweat and pain and dogged determination. That journey began for them last Wednesday.
