Show 8 Signpost Tuesday, July 5, 1988 Huston's first basketball schedule announced A 1988-89 Weber State basketball schedule that includes 16 home games was announced last week by first-year Coach Denny Huston. The list also includes two exhibition contests and the regular 16-game Big Sky Conference schedule. The Wildcats open the season at home against Southern Oregon State College, coached by former Weber State assistant coach Pete Berry on Nov. 26. Two nights later, WSC travels to Cedar City to play Southern Utah State College. It marks the first time any Division 1 team in the state of Utah has played the Thunderbirds on their home court. SUSC is now a Division 1 school. Critchlow, a former Bonneville High School standout under was accepted through the Honors Program by both Weber State and the University of Utah. Critchlow has a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and will take an accelerated course in English literature for six weeks in order to return for fall football practice in mid-August. There is also a strong possibility that he can return to Cambridge for further study later in the school year. Critchlow was named to the Big Sky Academic All-Conference Team this past year as well as the U.S. Achievement Academy Academic All-American Team. He spent last winter quarter in Washington, D.C. as an intern for Utah Senator Orrin Hatch. At 6-3, 200 pounds, Critchlow will play roving defensive back in the upcoming Wildcat football season. Last season as backup quarterback, Critchlow completed three of eight passes for 3 1 yards and carried the ball once for a 16-yard gain. He is best remembered for his freshman heroics in 1983 when he came off the bench at Montana State for an injured Tim Bernal late in the first half and completed six of eight passes to set up the winning field goal for a 23-20 win. Oilier non-conference games on the road besides Utah State and Utah include Cal State-Fullerton and the University of Akron. The Wildcats play at Akron the last game of the season, because Big Sky scheduling left WSC with an open week before the conference's postseason tournament. The schedule is competitive, according to Huston, but does give his new staff and new team a chance for some early success. "I believe if you over-schedule your team, you're going to create a lot of problems, especially for a new staff coming in with a new team for themselves," said Huston. "We have to gain the team's respect and the only way to do that is by winning. "When things go well for the players, they have a much better self-image and feel better about the coaching staff. So it's important for them to taste success and taste it early." The Big Sky Conference Post-Season Basketball Tournament will be held Thursday-Saturday, March 9-11, at the site of the regular season championship. Eat (cont'd from page 7) Everyone has favorite pre-race foods, but in general, choose those you know can digest easily. Carbohydrates (fruits, breads, sugary foods) generally digest faster than fats and proteins. Most of the preceding statements don't apply to ultra-endurance races such as 100-mile-plus bike races, 50-mile-plus runs or long triathlons. Competitors in these events must eat carbohydrates as they compete. The events are long enough in duration that their bodies have time to digest the food and manufacture a new energy supply. The rules about foods don't apply to drinking before, during and after competition. Liquids (excluding milk shakes and alcohol) are essential during strenuous activity.
