Show 10 Signposl-MontLiy, May 2, 1988 Mens's track Two qualify for Championship Michael Butler Asst. Sports Editor Wcbcr Slate received some unexpected gifts over the weekend. The Wildcat track team went their separate ways and had some good showings over the weekend in two different track meets. In the University of Oregon Track and Field meet held in Eugene, Weber's Darin Williams had a banner day in the steeplechase event. The senior, who ran for Bonneville High School before attending WSC, qualified for the NCAA steeplechase along with teammate Kris Cary. Williams who had been Weber's number four steeplechaser before the Oregon meet, has been preparing for the conference championships in both the 800 and 1500 meters, and was a pleasant surprise with his impressive sixth place finish. "Williams must have run a great race to qualify," indicated Asst. Coach Dan Waker, who was with other tracksters at the Utah State meet. "Darin is a senior, and it's good to have the seniors do well," remarked Walker. Cary, who failed to qualify last week at the Mt. Sac Relays in Pomona, California, bounced back to nail the sevcnlh position, and more importantly qualify for the NCAA's. Cary's time of 8:45.76 was just behind Williams clocking of 8:45.82. The NCAA qualifying time is 8:46. In Logan, WSC's Daniel Baird had an outstanding day. Baird, a freshman from Ogden High, scored two impressive victories in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Baird had a personal and team best 10.6 time in the 100 and tied his best time of 21.7 in the 200 to be Weber's only double winner. BYU drives golfers out of contention Ljun Martineau Asst. Sports Editor Weber State's hopes for a team appearance at this year's NCAA Championship were shattered as they finished the Cougar Classic behind BYU and Utah in Provo Saturday. BYU maintained its tradition of Cougar Classic wins by placing first with 1,065, beating second place Utah by 31 strokes. Third place UC-Santa Barbara had 1,104, fourth place New Mexico finished with 1,105 and Weber placed fifth with 1,112. Carito Villaroman turned in the best performance of the Weber State golfers, shooting 71-74-71-216 for eighth place in the individual standings. " I thought I was really ready to play at the Cougar Classic; I got off to a good start going six under par after 12 holes, but I had a couple of double bogeys on the par fives and slipped to one under for the round," said Villaroman. Surprisingly enough Villaroman said it was his short game that came together in Provo. "Usually my long game is better than my short game," he said. "I could tell after the first round that if you shot over par as a team you would give BYU no less than a five-stroke lead each round," said WSC Head Golf Coach, Mac Madsen. BYU proved that theory right by going five under par for the opening round on Provo's Riverside Country Club last Friday. BYU followed that up by going seven under in Friday's second round and nine under in the final tournament round. Utah played even in the opening round, four under in the second round, but fell off the pace in the final round went 20-over par as a team. "Shooting 20 over is not a characteristic of the Utah team, but they did the same thing at Pasatiempo falling off in the final round," said Madsen. "The end of our story came when we slipped at Santa Cruz and Fresno," said Madsen. Weber had BYU on the ropes going into the Fresno match 2-0. BYU improved their standings against WSC to 2-1 in Fresno, and WSC didn't make the cut at the Santa Cruz tournament. BYU appears to be the clear choice to represent district seven at this year's NCAA championship as they are tied with WSC and Utah in hcad-to-hcad competition, and by virtue of their tournament placements. Madsen said, "Miguel Tola will likely receive an invitation to this year's NCAA on the merit of his strong play last fall." Tola shot 71-76-75-222 in the Cougar Classic placing 18lh. The other WSC golfers finished as follows: Chuck Eble tied for 21st with 74-78-71-223, Craig Kamps 28th with 74-76-77-227, Kevin Pom-Arleau tied for 32nd with 72-77-80-229 and Mark Doherty had 80-73-81 for 39th. "I don't know if the team was fatigued or what, but our players who were new to the course just didn't make the necessary adjustment to the course," said Madsen. The Wildcats will lose Tola to graduation this year. "Now we'll have to regroup, look to recruiting and build on our strengths," said Madsen. Villaroman will be back Lynn Martineau Asst. Sports Editor According to Mac Madsen, Weber State's golf coach, the Junior World Championship is an excellent place to find new golf talent. That's where Madsen discovered Miguel Tola and Carito Villaroman. "Tola and Villaroman have been a real one-two punch combination for the WSC golf team," said Madsen. Tola graduates this year, but Villaroman will return next season to finish his education and resume his quest for a collegiate tournament win. Villaroman is a technical sales major at WSC; a field he hopes to ties to his golfing career. Villaroman, the junior from Isabella, Philippines, possesses an impressive golfing record, but a collegiate tournament win has thus far eluded him. "I thought Carito would win a tournament and be an All-Amcrican by now," said Madsen. "I'm hoping he'll come back really ready to roll his senior year, win some tournaments, make All-American and go to the NCAA championship again," he added.
