Show Cats lose tough game Blaine Bringhurst Sports Editor Tough opponents and an extensive road schedule has spelled disaster for the Lady Cats in the early stages of their 1987-88 basketball campaign. Although the Lady Cats have yet to secure a road win, they have played well in the friendly confines of the Dee Events Center. Weber State has compiled a 2-1 record at home, compared to a 0-7 road mark, giving them a 2-8 overall record. The Lady Cats are coming off of their first home loss of the season at the hands of Arizona State in a game played on December 31. The Lady Cats played well, but were not able to hold off a strong Sun Devil team and eventually lost a hard-fought contest, 72-69. In the New Year's Eve contest, the Lady Cats were able to perform in ways elusive to them in the earlier part of the season. "We finally played our perimeter game well," said head coach Joan Campbell. "We started playing together and with confidence. We are starting to gel as a team," Campbell added. Despite the loss to Arizona State, Campbell remained optimistic. "We played a Pac-Ten team to three points and had a good chance of winning," she said. "We are a real young team, and we have not yet played together a whole lot." Weber State was led by the outside shooting of Laurie Seehawer, Sheila Krahn and Melanie Knott, who scored 19, 15 and 13 points respectively. The Lady Cats have been without the services of the star, Katie Weyenberg, for three games. Weyenberg missed games against Cal-State Fullerlon, California at Irvine and Arizona State. Weyenberg, who made first team All-Conference honors last season, has had a team high 23 points and 19 rebounds this season. She is not expected to play in the Lady Cats upcoming game against Chapman College. The Lady Cats began the season on the road with losses to Brigham Young University, the University of Utah, the University of Pacific and the University of San Francisco. A pair of games in the Dee Events Center got the Lady Cats in the win column. Two impressive wins against Southern Utah State and Mesa College drew the Lady Cat record to 2-4. A disastrous road trip to California followed. Three lopsided losses to Loyola-Mary mount, Cal-Slate Fullerton, and the University of California at Irvine dropped the Lady Cat record to 2-7 and brought on some serious questions about the team's abilities. "We played really bad on the California trip, and we did some serious soul searching as a result of it," said Campbell. With the strong showing against Arizona State, it seems the soul searching proved advantageous. "With such a young team, it is hard to say what we will do," said Campbell. "But I am not down on the kids. They are trying hard, and I think we will be all right. We just need to be more consistent and cut down on our turnovers, and then maybe we can turn this season around," she added. The Lady Cats will again take the court in the friendly confines of the Dee Events Center on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Chapman College. It will be the final non-conference game for the Lady Cats, who open Mountain West Athletic Conference play on January 15 in Cheney, Washington against Eastern Washington University. "He is capable of scoring, and he was open tonight and shot with great confidence." Although the Wildcats had all pistons firing, they could never pull away from their scrappy foe. Every time the Wildcats could build a decent lead, the Thunderbirds would scratch and claw their way back into the game. SUSC did have the lead once in the game at 22-19, but a Tim Tyler three-point bomb and a Cobb jumper put the Wildcats ahead to stay, despite a couple of Thundcrbird runs. Weber State took a 51-47 lead into the intermission. Weber State added to that lead in the first minutes of the second half as Washington scored six straight points to help build the Wildcat lead to 59-49. Both teams then continued to exchange scoring spurts. The Thunderbirds would close the gap, and the Wildcats would respond by widening the gap. With 31 seconds on the clock, the Wildcats held a 95-91 lead. An inbound pass from Jeff Schofield gave Gibbs a wide open slam dunk to expand the Wildcat lead to 97-91 and seal a much-needed victory. "Dave Campbell (WSC assistant coach) suggested we look long," said Farmer. "Timmy ran a good route and Schofield spotted him." The win was a big one for the Wildcats, who begin Big Sky Conference play on Thursday at Montana. "It was important for us to play well," said Farmer. "We got some confidence, which is something to springboard us into conference play." -) rinTHro)c n (mm liLS Right now, Domino's Pizza is dealing you big savings.
