Khadafy, terrorism and the U.S. air strike on Libya When he was first asked for a public statement on the day of the strike, he thought the aide was talking about an airline strike. Hansen supports the U.S. attack and "wishes this guy (Khadafy) was a little smarter." Khadafy has the potential to start a world war, according to Hansen. He condemned terrorists for kill- . ing indiscriminately and for attacking the U.S. for its support of Israel. France and Western Europe "Fair weather friends" is how Hansen labeled France because of its refusal to allow U.S. jets to fly over its country's air space enroute to Libya last week. "France wants the best of both worlds," and they don't place the same value on terrorists killing innocent people as the U.S. does, he said. Without the funding and the 300,000 U.S. military personnel stationed in Western Europe, "there probably wouldn't be a Western Europe," a German am-basssador told Hansen. Hansen said he is ashamed of the way the Utah people acted towards the MX missle being based in Utah, because West Germany "has more nuclear weapons in their borders than all 11 Western States combined." President Reagan Hansen repeated his strong support of Reagan several times. At one point, he compared Reagan to President Abraham Lincoln. They both exhibit "such a grasp for what is right" and stick to their principles. Partisan politics with the Reagan administration is not a factor," he said. Hansen first met Reagan in 1976 when he came to Utah, dressed in a bright suit which, according to Hansen, was out of place for the conservative Utah setting. "The next time he came, he could have passed as a member of the twelve apostles," he said. Hansen has rarely opposed the president, and his 81 percent support of the president's policies places him in the top ten percent of Congressional supporters. Closing of the Intermountain Indian School "I supported the President in closing it," he said. The cost per student per year was $8,600. The cost to educate the Native Americans has been cut in half now that they attend schools closer to their reservations, he said. House Speaker Tip O'Neill While calling O'Neill "a very liberal guy" and "almost into socialism," Hansen said that O'Neill "is a fine gentleman." Hansen said it might seem odd for a conservative Republican to defend O'Neill. "But, at least O'Neill "Rich in Quality" "Prices You can Afford" 392-9997 7794 Newgate Mall stands up and tells where he's coming from philosophically." Priorities as a Congressman Hansen outlined his priorities as first, what is good for the U.S.; second, what is good for his constituents; and third, what is good for the state of Utah. "A congressman is an extension of the arm of the people," he said. Campaign against Gunn McKay "If I were Randy Horiochi (Utah State Democratic Chair), I'd also want Gunn McKay," he said. Hansen said this campaign will be tougher than if he was running against "someone off the wall." This race is targeted as one of the 15 most important by the Democrats, he said. The missing jet from the Libyan air strike In a meeting Hansen had with U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and U.S. Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger Thursday, he was told "the plane is gone." The plane was hit on the starboard side and ejected some armaments, he said.
