Yamashita to perform at festival The annual SummerArts Piano Festival has grown from a one-day affair to a grand experience, said Dr. Ed Thomas, chair of the University of Utah Music Department. The festival will be held this year June 13-19. Festival activities include workshops, lectures, guest recitals, competitions and classes. Master classes to be held consist of a student, chosen by audition, and a teacher in a private lesson setting viewed by an audience. There will also be classes centered around teaching teachers how to teach. The goal of the festival is to disperse as much information and knowledge as possible to students and teachers alike. Tokai Gakki, the Japanese manufacturer of Tokai Pianos, has arranged for the performance of a solo recitalist and master teacher, Mr. Masaru Yamashita. One of the leading piano artists in Japan, Yamashita, will lecture, teach and perform as a solo artist. Yamashita graduated from Aichi Prefectual College of Arts in Japan, and Munich National Music College in West Germany. He presently lectures at Gifu Music College in Japan. Fees for SummerArts have been minimized due to the fundraising efforts of the community. Complete SummerArts fee packages, including all events, room and evening meals at Snowbird, run from $85 to $100. Students will reside at the U. of U. for three days and at Snowbird the remaining three days. More information is available by calling or writing Susan Duhlmeir or Bonnie Gritton, directors of SummerArts, at the U. of U. The Theatre Department often seeks extra performers, especially for big productions, from community members, said Mark Peterson, marketing director for the Theatre Department. "The casting of a production depends on the special needs of the individual production," Peterson said. "Often we need to tap into other departments on campus, such as the Music Department to meet the needs of the production."Many character parts, such as small children or senior citizens, are unrealistic for college students to portray, said Peterson. Those character roles come from members of the community.Theatre productions are for the community and are often put on with the help of the community. Students not involved in the Theatre Department are welcome to participate in auditions for many productions performed here on campus. Peterson said. The college does sponsor some productions that are limited to students, such as the student production, The Fifth ofJuly, which is currently running in the Monson Theatre. For two of the cast members, this is their first WSC production; both are non-theatre majors. The -Utah Musical Theatre (UMT), an independent organization that currently operates out of the college, also uses non-students for their productions. Over 100 little girls auditioned for Annie, one of the musicals to be performed this summer by UMT. Theatre is for everyone, from the biology major to the community member, who performs, said Peterson. There is plenty to do for anyone who wants to become involved. Those interested in auditioning for future parts can call either Dr. Ronald Ladwig, Theatre Department chair at 626- 6432, or the Theatre Department secretary at 626-6340. Someone in the department will contact these people when future auditions open. m Hurt Book Sale Save 50! Quality books with slight damage. Great Selection. oiv-. .
