Show Competition water-skiing in Utah; A skiers haven Signpost Sports Supplement Wednesday, May 4, 1988 5B Dave Burns Staff Reporter How many limes have you thought to yourself, "I know I could water-ski competitively if I lived in Florida or California." In reality, Utah is a skiers haven. Not only do Utahns enjoy the greatest snow on earth, but we also enjoy the lakes that the In the Ogden area, there are three lakes that have a slalom course set up for the public to ski on. Pioneer Lake, located in Plain City, is open on Wednesday evenings to anyone who wants to join the American Water Ski Association. Private ski lessons are also available for those who would like to learn both trick and slalom skiing. Tuesday and Thursday nights are s -- . . j melting snows feed. Every summer thousands of Utahns begin getting their boats ready, tuning up their equipment, and preparing for the quest for the 'perfect water.' Many hours are spent practicing turns, when the only competition is among friends seeing who can get their shoulder closest to the water or who can spray the biggest wall. The friendly competition is fun for awhile, but leaves many skiers thirsting for more, yet not knowing where to find it In frustration many skiers turn to water weenies and intertubes looking for the challenge of staying on top of something you cannot control. These challenges leave the skier with only a false sense of mastery, because really there is no way to judge ones performance. So what is the answer? Where can you find a slalom course that will provide competition and a sense of accomplishment? public nights at the lake just west of Wall Avenue on 21st street There is also a third lake in Centerville, just west of the Freeway. It is open to the public on Tuesday night, pending on the depth of the water. Skiers of all abilities and ages use these lakes to better their skills and prepare for their level of competition. For instance, Rome Goodspeed started skiing three years ago at the age of thirteen. After just two years of skiing Rome participated in her first competition; but, don't let that be deceiving, it is not easy. Another local skier, Travis Mickelson, is nationally ranked and trains on Pioneer Lake with Intermountain Water Skiing Incorporated Be warned, however, once you start skiing a course, it holds a power over you, because of the extra goals you have to achieve. You just can't beat a slalom course. Scuba (cont'd from page 3B) During the third weekend in August, a group of scubadivers run the Green River below Flaming Gorge in wet suits According to Christensen it is one of the neatest experiences in scubadiving. "It's not that dangerous, even in the rapids. It sounds ominous unjder the water, but it isn't. You see so many fishes in the three and a half hour dive." "A student going to Weber could pick up a credit of of P.E. by taking a scuba class," he added. Christensen also noted that many continuing education groups, as well as many law enforcement groups take scuba for credit in their programs.
