Dismissing any one would take "'away much of the beauty and interest that .art creates in our lives. Mo, artists do not see like people in other professions, they have an eye of their own. The way an artist sees may be different from people in other professions, but like people in other professions, artists like to get together in a conference situation and discuss what they like best. In this case, a group of graphic designers, illustrators and photographers gathered in Park City to enjoy each other's company and talk about art. Although many had ulterior motives the ski slopes are only minutes away the main reason for attending the conference was to get a glimpse of how some of the "big names" operate. It was a chance for students and professionals alike to see what others are doing and how to best prepare for the growing competition in graphic design. Each of the conference speakers had his or her own way of thinking and running his or her business. The variety of opinions created interest; it also left the door open for the creative process to act on each idea. Michael Vanderbyl, an owner of a studio in Los Angeles, brought out the idea that good design does sell. The market for graphic design is opening up and if an artist is able to relate to people through design, they will be successful. One thing that Vanderbyl did when he was first starting out was to do jobs just for exposure and not concern himself too much with the pay. It seemed to get him the exposure he needed and carried him on to higher paying jobs, which, in turn, gave him the flexibility to say no to a client he felt would not enhance his own image. Ken White, another designer and studio owner, talked on the philosophical aspect of his work. He introduced his five points for success in being happy and successful in any profession. These depend on discovering your own uniqueness and personality, whiGh help to you define yourself. The first is to change your attitude to a point where it is totally positive and to monitor your thought process. The second is to put your whole heart and mind into everything you do. Plumber three is to put your goals down in writing because it increases your chances for success, number four is persistence make sure you know what you want and do not give up until you get it. The most important is number five: enthusiasm about life and work is essential for success. Following the examples of Michael Vanderbyl and Ken White are not enough to succeed in the competitive world of graphic design. If an artist wants to succeed, enthusiasm and commitment are important, but even more important, an artist needs to see things with a different eye. |
