Gerber narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team last Saturday in Los Angeles, California, but his fourth place finish makes him an alternate for the team. '84 Olympic Torch In Ogden The Olympic torch is in Utah and today a runner bearing the torch is scheduled to pass through Ogden at 5:30 p.m. The torch is on its way to Los Angeles for the 1984 Olympics and is scheduled to arrive there on July 28 to open the games. By the time the torch arrives in Los Angeles, it will have traveled 8700 miles through thousands of cities and towns in 33 states. The scheduled route of the torch from Salt Lake City will be north along Beck Street to North Salt Lake, then along Bountiful's Main Street tod State Road 106 through Centerville to Farmington. The torch will then travel along U.S. 89 to Ogden going north on Washington Boulevard. The torch is accompanied by a massive caravan of support vehicles and is carried by 200 runners supplied by AT&T, local telephone companies and locally sponsoring organizations who paid $3000 a mile for the privilege to carry the torch. The torch will be carried the length of Washington Boulevard and go out north along U.S. 89 passing through Perry, Willard and into Brigham City. The caravan is expected to make camp for the night in Tremonton before continuing north into Idaho. Gerber's Strong Finish Qualifies Him As An Olympic Alternate by Steve Spafford Asst. Sports Editor Weber State steeplechase star, Farley Gerber, fell short in his bid to make the United States Olympic team Saturday in Los Angeles. His fourth-place finish in the trials was only good enough to earn him the role of alternate on the United States steeplechase team. It was a disappointing finish to what has been a very successful year for Gerber. Going into Saturday's final, Gerber felt that he would have to run 8:20.00 or better, to make the team. His personal best in the steeplechase is 8:19.67, but that time would not have been fast enough to qualify as all three qualifier's ran faster than 8:19 to make the team. Utahn Henry Marsh, who has been Gerber's training partner, won the final in 8:15.91, which is the fastest time in the world this year. Brian Deimer was second in, 8:17.00 followed by John Gregorek at 8:18.45. Gerber's fourth-place time was 8:22.54 as he edged Ivan Huf to take the alternate position. Gerber stayed toward the back of the pack through the early stages of the race to keep from being joustled, or bumped while going over the barriers. With about three laps to go, Gerber and Marsh started moving up through the pack to put themselves in the position that they wanted to be. As they started the bell lap (the final lap), Gerber broke to the front of the pack and held the lead briefly before Marsh shot by him to grab the lead. With 300-meters to go, Gerber still held on to third place, and a spot on the team, but he was beginning to struggle and his usually smooth stride became forced as Gregorick passed him. Gerber was never able to regain his stride and catch Gregorick, and he eased up the last 50-meters barely finishing fourth. Gerber has proved that he is one of the best steeplechasers in the nation based on his performances this spring. ABC's announcers called Gerber "the find of the season" as he came from out of nowhere to almost grab a spot on the '84 Olympic team. Gerber won the NCAA steeplechase title this year in the fastest time by a U.S. born collegian and he is a two-time Big Sky steeplechase champion. At 24-years-old, Gerber has probably not reached his maturity as a distance runner, so he can probably look forward to a lot of international competition in the future maybe even in the '88 Olympics in Seoul.
