Arboretum is donated to Weber The first of 33 different species of trees which will make up the "A. Russell and Irene Croft Arboretum" have been planted at Weber State College. The arboretum is the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Croft, longtime friends of WSC, and will contain trees which are not normally found in this area. It is located just east of the Stewart Library. It will receive its official name during ceremonies later this summer. According to Don Spainhower, development officer at Weber State, each tree will be clearly marked outlining the scientific name, the common name and some general information about each one. Spainhower said, "We hope the community and grade schools will take advantage of this new addition to the campus." Croft said, "I've been interested in trees all my life and am pleased to make this presentation on the Weber State campus." The trees are already being planted by campus landscape crews. Ron Curtis, director of campus landscape and a tree surgeon, said that all the trees should be planted by the end of June. Curtis said that the area which measures 180 by 80 feet will be maintained in as natural a condition as possible to give students not only an outdoor laboratory, but to provide an excellent place for relaxation and study as well. Croft graduated from Weber Academy in 1915 and returned to teach at the college for six years. He is an honorary degree recipient from Weber State. He said, "This addition will be beautiful and of utilitarian value. It will have excellent teaching aspects. It has been a long-time dream for me."
